DPF removal illegal as of February 2014

The Department for Transport has reacted to the ‘ruse’ of removing or hollowing-out the DPF to overcome regeneration / blockage problems.

From February 2014 it is an MoT failure if the exhaust system is incomplete. See:
https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...s-guidance.pdf

The press release states that it will be illegal to drive without the DPF if one was originally fitted.

I foresee lots of issues. People have removed DPFs based on advice given in good faith that it was legal. Some cars may have had a DPF removed by a previous owner who has not informed the new owner.

It’s going to be interesting!

I bought a 1.4 petrol Doblo to avoid the DPF issue – glad I did.

I wonder what the deal is if you paid a company the £500 " going rate" last month to have it removed..,
you'll have to buy a new unit AND pay labour for it's installation and re-calibration = cheaper to scrap SOME vehicles..!! esp. if it's doing Short journeys and will choke-up anyway..!

Or get the car MOTed in January and sell it PDQ before the new requirements come into effect. A dirty trick but I feel sure that many will be tempted!

Re: DPF removal an MOT FAILURE as of February 2014

Titles is misleading, it always has been illegal to remove the DPF, it's just now an MOT failure from Feb 2014, and about time also if you ask me!

would be better if they forced car makers to make them so they dont block or force them to put a large sticker on the display models saying why you shouldnt buy a city car with one or if you intend to do loads of short trips only.

Agreed. Should be on the rating sheet things they put in the windscreen showing the MPG and estimated fuel cost.

Re: DPF removal illegal as of February 2014

Wow, I'm glad I read this! I was seriously considering getting mine removed from my 500 Multijet. It doesn't have any problems as I use it mainly for long steady motorway journeys, but I'm peeved by the reduction in what is otherwise an exceptionally good fuel consumption!
It seems I'll be hanging on to my DPF for now. Bu99er!

Its exceptionally good fuel consumption anyway in a 500 isn't it? If I can get around 70mpg out of a Bravo with a DPF then a 500 should easily exceed this.

Re: DPF removal illegal as of February 2014

I agree, I occasionally get 70 mpg too, and have managed even better on some journeys. I just know I could get even more without a DPF regenerating regularly. Another thing: I know it's the only way to work these systems but it does seem counterintuitive to have to burn more fuel, and therefore produce more CO2, just to reduce particulate emissions!

CO2 doesn't kill people though, Diesel particulates do.

Are you kidding?? What do you think the effects of CO2 are? Global warming, more storms, floods, rising sea level... It kills people alright!
But anyway, for now I'd just rather save fuel

CO2 is carbon dioxide, it's a naturally occouring compound. If you think it's increasing global warming and is the main cause then perhaps we should all stop breathing.

Global warming is a natural event which we may be slighting speeding up, and even that's not been proven.

At least it's not directly killing people with slow painful cancers and lung diseases which diesel particulates have been doing for decades.

This is exactly my opinion! How can we be taxed on something that has not been proven beyond doubt. The earth goes through cycles, and we are overdue an ice age anyway so I do not believe me in my little car is killing the world. Country's like China and India are producing enough CO2 for anything I do not to matter one jot anyway.

But I am aware diesel particulates cause horrendous local pollution, which is a different thing entirely.
