Need advice on which diesel engine.

Hi to all,
Its been awhile since I was on this site, and I'm in need of some advice.
The situation is that my girlfriend has to change her car (97 toyota corrola 1.3 automatic) to a Doblo WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle).
The Doblo is a great wagon from all accounts with loads of space inside, and not too bad to work on, from what I've been told.
They do come in petrol and diesel, and I'm more inclined to go for the diesel engine.
Various sizes...1.2...1.3....1.9. I see that the 1.3 appears more popular, and fuel consumption is around mid 40's. This engine is a multijet, not too sure what that means, but I believe other car makers use it in one form or another.......can't be all bad then!!!
Would it be a wise move to run with the 1.3 multijet, instead of the 1.2 diesel?
Also, are there different types of 1.3 multijet engines.....Active, and so on. Which would the best 1.3 engine to watch out for.
I've owned afew Fiats in my time.......2 Diesel Tempra's ( Brilliant!!!), Fiat 1100 (that is back awhile) Fiat 850, 2 Mareas (very under rated car), my dad still has one (just passed the NCT).
I now drive a VW Beetle 1200 1974, and a VW Type 2 bay window camper.
Both going lovely. Thank god!!!
That's it folks.
If anyone can help me I know from previous experience, ITS HERE!!!
Thanks a million.
John.

Thanks for that. I live and learn something new straight away.
Do the 1.3 multijet come in non and turbo versions?
Is there a favourite between them?
Thanks for your help.
John.

All 1.3 are Turbo, 1.9 comes in NA and turbo form I believe. Favourite out of the 1.9 is the turbo'ed version.

Would the 1.9 turbo version be the same as the 1.9jtd diesel engine that is fitted to the fiat mareas (like my dads one). If it is, his engine is practically bulletproof.
Thanks.
John.

Re: Need advice on which diesel engine.

Like all things, it's down to budget. I'm relative new to the Fiat world so could stand corrected, but I believe the diesel engine eras in Doblo's are as follows:
Early models - 1.9 Non turbo
Then went to 1.9JTD Turbo (single cam 8 valve) with a cross over period with
1.3 Multijet engine.
Then the 1.9 Multijet (16 valve)
and finally the 1.6 (would assume Multijet).

I'm not sure if the newest 1.6 comes with the high roof option that would be desirable for the wheel chair access.

I've got the 1.9JTD with 108k miles on the clock. To be honest with you the perception I have of the 8 valve single cam engine is that its gutless until the turbo comes in just under the 2000 rpm. That said, it does return 40mpg running around and the goes up easily nearing the 50mpg on a run, driving steadily (can't do much else in the Doblo, but then why would you want to). Again my private thoughts are that the 16 valve 1.9 Multijet would have more umph especially at the lower revs end. I don't know what the 1.3 power output is so can't comment.

My interpretation of what I've read on here, is that the Multijet engines have the DPF potential issues at higher mileage times.

The 1.6 is the newest of the lot and from what I've read is a good engine.

I've the 1.6 in my Bravo, seems a solid and strong engine. All 1.6 units are Euro 5 compliant, cheaper road tax (30 pa on my Bravo) and come with DPFs.

No issues with mine, as long as you're not doing the sort of journeys you should only have a petrol for you'll be fine

Re: Need advice on which diesel engine.

The first Doblos came with a 1.2 petol engine and the 1.9 non turbo Diesel.

Both of these are best avoided.

The 1.9JTD turbo, which I had, is a very reliable engine and I got about 45mpg out of it. The revised Multijet version has 105bhp, rather than the 100 of mine, and again is a good engine, as long as you do long runs because from what I've read here there can be DPF troubles.

My newish Doblo has the 1.6 Multijet engine, which spins very freely (16 valves) and is reputedly a reliable engine, and the DPF is improved because it is integrated (built into the cylinder head) and so warms up quickly, whereas the earlier ones are down on the exhaust pipe somewhere and run cooler unless the car is driven hard regularly.

The 1.3 Diesel is, as you say, used on lots of cars - as are the other Fiat turbos. I don't know much about it, but my neighbour has a motability Doblo with one and that seems to run sweetly.

Are you sure, its in the manifold, but not in the head as far as I'm aware.

Re: Need advice on which diesel engine.

Yes, the manifold - sloppy of me. Top of the engine anyway.

I'd avoid all the older DPFs built into the lower exhaust pipe as these are almost guaranteed to give trouble unless you live in the motorway.

Re: Need advice on which diesel engine.

I have 2 1.9JTD doblos (both around the 100k mark and used daily) give them a thrashing every week to clear the EGR and they will go on forever with a timing belt/water pump change every 4 years. The engine is softly tuned so not under any strain and pulls like a train especially up hills. I never get less than 50-54 MPG on the trip meter.

Personally, and I am talking about my own needs and requirements, I think the 1.9JTD doblo is the best vehicle Fiat have made.

I couldn't agree with you more. My dad has a 1.9jtd marea estate, and it goes like a rocket. Brilliant!
Thanks for your input.

I agree. But the road tax here is 710 euros. The 1.3 diesel is half the price. Its the budget issue really.

Thanks for your advice.

Grateful.

John.
