anyway, in regards to performance, what happens if you shut of the EGR ? I was clearing it out with the engine running and revving. At times a good blast of air is coming from that valve, so if its shut of does the engines air intake performance get messed up ?

An EGR, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is a means of reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions from your engine. The EGR valve, as its name suggests, re-circulates exhaust gases to act as a coolant in the combustion chambers.

Over time EGR valves become sticky and will eventually seize open or closed. If seized open the engine may idle poorly or even stall. If seized closed the engine will operate at increased temperatures under load and may cause "engine knock". This is especially bad for turbocharged vehicles, as the increased exhaust gas temperature can lead to premature failure of the turbocharger. (Description cut from the web)

re-burning gasses reduces Nox, there is a added benefit of 'slightly' lower temperatures as you say but engines done fine before EGR's. My main issue is pollutants and thats why I do not blank of my EGR's, infact give the car a blast once a week and it's fine. I work with diesels daily and the crap that comes out of them (and the oil) is not nice hence why I tend to be pro EGR/DPF.

Bit of a myth really as the EGR valve is closed at full load and at full load is when your engine temp would be at its highest. Yes under lighter loads it does lower combustion temp but its function is solely to lower NOx it just so happens that under opening it lowers combustion temp too.

Hello, If anyone is interested I've just bought a new Fiat EGR valve for my Doblo 1.9 Multijet 8v (engine code 186A9000) for £59.99 +VAT from my local Fiat Dealer. Apparently Fiat have introduced a 'trade' price for Doblo's due to the heavy Taxi business, just to encourage Taxi users to keep coming back to their dealers.

Thought this might help some decisions...

I was going down that road - rang my local stealer, gave them the engine code...
£145 +vat for a recon, £177+vat for new
Why is it one dealer can charge 3x less for the same bit
