We have just been to Germany and back in Mrs Bean's Doblo and I am shocked by such poor MPG. The very best we achieved was 45.2 mpg on the trip computer and that was with carresing the car, On the way back it was at 42mpg. We didn't go over 70, stayed around 65 -67 mph. We had 2 adults and 1 six year old. The luggage fitted in the boot so really there was nothing to indicate trouble.

Now Mrs Bean uses her Dobie for work as a gardener. She does mainly town driving which kills the engine anyway but considering she has the 1.9 multijet and my Stilo MW is the 1.9JTD I would have thought the difference would be minimal on a long journey, (I average 53mpg).

So, any ideas?

As a comparison I did over 1000 miles 5 up + luggage and averaged (indicated) 58.7mpg. This was 800 miles of motorway and 200 miles of London traffic, overall very good.

Have you checked your air filter? and usual things like tyre pressures, brakes sticking etc

french bean- Not a hugely constructive reply here for you, but if you think 45mpg is poor then try driving a berlingo! Asides that, I'd check, as suggested, things like filters for cleanliness, as well as perhaps treating the car to a fresh sump of oil
T14086- how the hell could you average 58.7mpg? That's utterly unattainable at 70mph, surely?

Looked at the tyres, they look to be correct pressure, I can get them properly checked. The brakes seem ok, there wasn't any pulling. The discs looked ok through the alloys. Never thought of the air filter, will check that. Think it's worth pointing out that it is an 06 plate with just 18k on the clock and she has it serviced every 12 months. Emissions in the past have been a bit tight at the MOT but often a good burn before the test helps to improve them.

I did state 'indicated' (never done a brim to brim test) infact my old 2 litre mondeo diesel used to easily achieve 60mpg on same run. The mondeo would only show 42-44 at 56mph but at 70 it would show 60mpg. Alot depends on engine size, conditions, vehicle gearing etc...56mph is not always the most economical speed.

Driving technique also has alot to do with it, I often put instant MPG on the display which is a good way of teaching you when to back off that throttle and my dad showed me a few fuel saving tricks years ago

Standard alloys/tyres?

Worth checking air filter or as they are cheap enough (tenner) I would just change it however check service history/checklist.first.

Just ressurected this again because we have done the same trip again to Germany as previously and we achieved 50 mpg.

All we've done since the last trip is changed the front tyres, had the car MOT'd and took out and checked the airfilter. I did tell Mrs Bean to give the car a good thrashing between the two trips, which we both did and we drove about 5mph slower this time. Can't work it out but I'm grateful.
