Hey all,

just thought id share this,

just got fitted some new 175/70/14 snow tyres on the standard rims. had to revamp the rims with a new respray. gloss black this time, it was matt black last winter.

these tyres have got some serious tread. ive never actually had a problem prior to getting these tyres, never got stuck before but i know the limits of my poor dobbin.

i wonder how she will cope this year. much better i hope. :slayer:

Admit it. You're praying for snow now so you can test them out!

Funny comment about the paint been gripier! Classic. (y)

Hand painted with white rubber paint, took a lifetime to do but love the result.

Just need the snow now! :slayer:

i found the tyre pens on ebays after doing it. GRRRR! (n)

Over and out

This will be our second year running snow tyres on the dobbie, also have snow chains for when it gets really bad. Didn't have any probs throughout the heavy snow last year, and we live out in the country so no gritting!

Are the little holes for fitting studs?

you can clearly see they are marked M&S however proper winter tyres have the snowflake symbol which they do not,

so they are not winter tyres, or snow tyres as some call them

FAIL

have a read

M+S marking on tyres is very misleading.

Many AWD tyres are rated M+S, M&S or M/S, i.e., mud and snow. Established by the USA Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), the M+S designation refers only to the tread pattern. The M+S standard calls for a tyre with grooves at the outside of the tread that extend into the centre. It also means that 25% of the tyre tread contact surface be open, i.e., a more open tread pattern.

You will find the M+S symbol on most all-season tyres, on off-road and all-terrain tyres and even some high performance summer tyres may have this designation. However, there are no performance standards to meet or traction tests to pass. Any tyre with grooves at angles and with 25% of the tread void can be labelled as M+S.

And on icy snow and on ice, the open tread grooves have zero effect on performance. Control of the vehicle comes strictly from equal parts of the tyre rubber compound that provides adhesion and the effects from the tread sipes.

In 1999, the RMA defined a real “snow” or winter tyre with its severe snow-rating. Car and AWD tyres that pass this performance test and are embossed with the “snowflake on a mountain peak” icon. Severe snow-rated tyres must provide traction at least 10% better than a standard reference test tyre.

The off-road, all-terrain and all-season M+S tyres cannot pass this test. The M+S rating doesn’t mean much. The severe snow rating does.

Someone's pretty handy with google and wikipedia! ;)

Surely
is a bit harsh though? He's just spent good money on these!

He's just spent good money on these!

the op clearly thinks that he has "snow tyres" when in fact they are not, i would take them back to wherever they were bought from for a refund or exchange them for a proper set of winter tyres,

i dont mean to sound harsh but i'm surprised no one else has said anything

You might be right that he should get a refund. As for no-one else saying anything, I don't think anyone else looked closely enough!

Such a shame Sir, i wish i could give you back the time you wasted in trying to correct me?

With the response you gave its no wonder Britian is failing. FAST

Thank you for that. (n)

and by the way, i got them as MUD/SNOW/TERRAIN tyres. with no intention AT ALL to fit them until i need to. i might even carry them round in the back of my vehicle beacuse i simply can?

i have very nice alloys on and they are only for summer use.

oh and one last thing, the total price for all the new tyres and revamp of winter wheels. ZERO pounds and ZERO PENCE.

FACT.

i got this decription and it outlines fully what i already understood.

i can do wiki too! :yuck:

'''Mud tires are specialty tires with large, chunky tread patterns designed to bite into muddy surfaces. The large, open design also allows mud to clear quickly from between the lugs. Mud terrain tires also tend to be wider than other tires, to spread the weight of the vehicle over a greater area to prevent the vehicle from sinking too deeply into the mud. However in REASONABLE amounts of mud and snow, tires should be thinner. Being thinner, the tire will have more pressure on the road surface, thus allowing the tires to penetrate the snow layer and grip harder snow or road surface beneath. This does not compensate when the snow is too deep for such penetration, (so id be at home anyway with the kettle on) where the vehicle will sink into the snow and 'snowplow' the snow in front. (thats the councils job - not mine) In this case, wider tires are preferred, as they have a larger contact patch and are better able to 'float' on top of the mud or snow.'''''''

ANYWAY

i am not doing jermey clarkson and going to the artic so i doubt a missing symbol will be a the top of my list of things to worry about.but the chocolate bars will be! i just wonder in all fairness how many people can succesfully drive in snow with the tyres they got fitted the previous year, i just saw the serious tread on these and thought, hey these will get me to work and il still be earning and helping along the way.

Seriously 100% of the roads i continue to use this winter will still allow me to use these tyres and do it succesfully without the need for a huge cost of a official snow tyre that i will only have to remove and/or replace to more suitable road conditions.

i wish it would be artic conditions but i doubt it. maybe 2weeks max.

but il tell ya something now. i bet i end up helping people this year because ive got loads of extra grip THEY HAVE NOT. or should i say sorry mate can not help you i have not got a symbol on them saying there 100% for snow so il just have to drive off, infact i shoudnt even be driving it, i best leave it here. lets walk.or should i be walking in the snow ive got astroturf shoes on ? i feel like im melting HELP!

Some people. :bang:

Yes they are but not worth fittin g as if i hit solid road il be screwed. i dont want to put these on too early as my dobbin eats tyres. especially these. plus studs and spikes are illegal in UK!! :slayer:
