Hello all :)

Noob alert

I have just bought an '06' Doblo Active 1.3 Multijet. I was driving the car down the motorway the other day and I noticed a vibration problem in the cabin between 60-ish mph and 75-ish mph. The only way I can describe the vibration is thudding sensation in the air; the same as when someone has one car window open, with no other windows open & the air has 'nowhere to go.'

I'm wondering whether it could be a wheel balancing issue, or worst case scenario a clutch issue?

Can someone offer me any advice?

Thanks in advance...

Check the tyres out, look for bulges in sidewalls, flat spots, tread separation.
If it was wheel balance on the front you'd expect some steering wheel shudder if front although pas will dampen it. Unlikekely to be a clutch problem at those speeds. Check windows are closed!, erm try it in a different gear. If you think it threatens the stability of the car take it to a garage. Let us know how it goes, if you can provide more info it would help.

The tyres look fine & are fairly new. There is a little bit of left to right movement through the steering wheel too, which is what led me to believe it might be poorly balanced wheels...

I had this problem with badly buckled alloys on my 1.9 08 multijet..

Had to replace all 4 alloys with steel wheels.. instantly the problem was solved!

I had a similar issue last year with my Berlingo which was 5 yrs old and had covered about 90k miles. The rear tyres were original and were not too badly worn or cracked etc. However when the car was on the ramp with the rear wheels lifted there was a significant run in/out seen from the rear when the wheels were spun. Basically my rear tyres had become mishapen over time and the problem was sorted with new ones.

Regards

Peter

Get it on a 2 post ramp so the wheels are off the ground and spin the wheels, that is the best way to find out if the tyre(s) are out of shape, alternatively you could jack each wheel up and spin them by hand. Doblo's aren't the most aerodynamic of cars so they do produce buffetting when the windows are open, side window wind deflectors go some way to quieting them.

When I drove my Doblo home from the car supermarket I noticed the same thing. :bang:

I got new front tyres (balanced) and tracking (or wheel alignment) done ASAP. Problem solved. :)

The garage said my tracking was very badly out, perhaps it was a side effect.

Perhaps that will help?

The car is booked in the garage on Monday 12th to have some snagging issues done - hopefully everything will be rectified then?

I'll keep you all info'd

When I replaced my fronts for the first time I was told the tracking was out - not by much. Within a few months I noticed signs of wear so went back. First off they accused me of kerbing them (and yet no marks on the alloys!) then one of them said the numbers in the book were wrong, Fiat had sent out the wrong figures originally & they now had the new figures.
it might have been bullplop but they were happy to refund 50% & adjust the tracking FOC

It turns out it might be wheel balancing after all... The previous owner of the car was in Orkney & he did his own tyre changing... I'm hopefully getting the car back Monday/Tuesday next week, so we'll see huh?

WOW  They've had it since the 12th for a "few snagging issues"? 11 days seems like more than a few issues.

Indeed... The plot thickens...

I collected the car last night.

Guess what - its still juddering

I have just e-mailed the dealer and will be posting a letter off on Monday telling them to either sort the car or I'm rejecting it!

Do you know a friendly local mechanic that'll look at it and diagnose for you? It might be worth a quick look (and the labour charge) so that you know exactly what the problem is.

Did you get new tyres, alignment and balancing done as part of the "snag list"?

Could it be a suspension issue? (lower arm or bushes or something)

I have rejected the car, it went back yesterday and I have a full refund of the purchase price. I'm in the process of buying a 1.9 Dynamic. Hopefully all will be well with that one

Check if it's a 105 or 120 bhp. I have a 120 and have been burdened with a dpf. If you don't drive at motorway speeds regularly the 105 will be best as there is no dpf to regenerate.

Otherwise a 1.9 is an excellent idea! (on my second now)

Good luck!

It's the 120... It'll only be used for family outings, which normally involve a trip down the A1, so I don't foresee any issues with the DPF...

All this of course is subject to the DEKRA inspection of the vehicle I have booked; I'm not getting bitten like I did with the 1.3 I bought!
