Hi All
First post so here goes, just bought a 04 plate doblo van with 84k on the clock no history but in very good nick and was wondering if anyone out there had done a cambelt, my local garage wants about £200 for doing it but just wondered how hard a job is it

Hello Woodfit,

I've got an '04 1.9 JTD car.

When it was due for the 72000 mile service and cambelt change, the whole job cost over £400!!

Within a short time, I discovered when travelling on motorways, at motorway regulation speeds, I used to get 61 - 67 mpg, which was good.

Since that service and cambelt change, my car, even today is returning no more than 56mpg!!! I've asked my dealer several times about it, but I just get fobbed off.

Frank.

if you have to to ask how hard or easy it is to do a cambelt change then you obviously not that experianced then you best let a mechanic do it for you as its to easy to muck up your engine {did'nt spell that right }

cheers

Frank insist they recheck the cam belt as it is likely to be one or 2 teeth out.
You can warn them if they don't check it you will go to another garage and if its out will report them to trading standards, and take them to the small claims court for the extra fuel you have used and the cost of having it re-checked.

If you are in the AA or RAC I think they have a service to check work done by rogue garages.. so that might be an idea also.

Did they change the oil at the same time ? I've had 2 mpg difference on a Picasso 1.6 (grenade engine) just with using cheaper oil rather than the quality expensive stuff.

Why is it obvious???? If you had read the post which you OBVIOUSLY didn't you might have noticed that I wrote that I had just bought the van and was asking the question because of the knowledge of most of the users on these forums with the exception of a few. And for your information my previous van was a 1.9 Kangoo and the last job I carried out was to change the syncro mesh on 2nd and 4th gears, does that make me qualified??
If you don't have anything positive to say then don't say anything:p

hi woodfit,
i've just had to take the cambelt off, and put it back on again three times in a week, on a 1.9 JTD 8 valve doblo car (due to a rebuild - https://www.fiatforum.com/doblo/277332-2002-doblo-1-9-jtd-8v-misfire-after-rebuild.html?p=2823694.)

so now it is easier and quicker for me to do than at first.:)

if you have experience of replacing a cambelt on other vehicles then it should be no major problem for you on the jtd.

have you had a look round the forum for pictures and diagrams for setting the cam timing?
an 8 valve jtd is (obviously!) simpler than a 16v engine. only one cam!

even so, i would recommend taking pictures of evreything (like auxiliary belt routing, wiring routing etc) as you remove items. (y)
have you got a manual?

because i'm not sure how much of this that you already know, i'll leave it open to you to ask specifics.

i'd leave a good 3 hours todo the job, from opening to closing the bonnet, with all tools and parts ready.
maybe 5 hours if you want a more leisurely pace, with brew stops etc :D

ask any questions and i'm sure you'll get replies, some more interesting than others
