I'm in the process of joining the Doblo club, currently looking at a JTD Dynamic. Was looking on Ebay, as to bits availability, and found loads of tuning chips for JTD's offering improvements from 101ps to 125ps, all for between 79 and 99 euros. Seems pretty cheap, but has anyone tried them. My German's not very good, but they seem to be TuV approved. Any comments?

Why not give Alfanige a try at Angel Tuning - his link is at the top of the page.

I know he does the Ulysse and Stilo JTDs, amongst others [both my cars are done (y)] so would imagine the Doblo a go-er.

Plus his tuning is all software based, no hardware mods needed ;)

Find out which method they use to get the extra power.

If it's purely by increasing the injection pressure by opening the MPROP valve on the high pressure pump leave it well alone. The high pressure pump is the first part on the common rail system that is going to wear so no point making it work harder than it needs to.

If the extra power is through advancing the injection timing and increasing injection duration, your fuel system will last much longer although the engine will run a little smokier when you're ragging it :D This would be my recommendation every time.

Thanks for the technical reply RSPilot. I've translated via Babelfish what the German Ebay offer claims as follows:-

"Owing to modern technology the diesel engine is today a trend-setting drive with many advantages opposite the petrol engine. By turbochargers and high performance fuel injection systems (e.g.: Common Rail) it has enormous power reserves, which tuner uses itself gladly too makes. Opposite many other boxes that has amh booster 2 tax module a substantial advantage: Most Tuningboxen in the trade is installed before the Diesel pump and to catch so the signal, which is given to the Diesel pump, off and continues to send another signal to the Diesel pump. Simplified the Diesel pump instructed more Diesel is expressed to inject and the injection pressure increase! Thereby an increased output is reached, however any harmony is missing and the turbochargers continues to run on the old calculated values. More badly still it is that many of these boxes change the values and the amount of filling and filler times in such a way also with partial load and full load that a damage is inevitably the result! More achievement at a high price! We know it all - the smoking Diesel box drivers, who pull a black cloud behind itself, so that one is forced to switch the nebula light on. The amh booster 2 "works" there exactly in the other direction. It interrupts not the signal of the controller, but sends data to the controller. Owing to the modern fuel injection system Common Rail we developed the possibility of getting over this plant directly access to the controller. The Commonrail plant is constantly controlled by the controller. The pressure, which prevails in the plant, is constantly sent to the controller. Here the amh booster 2, which is installed directly to the Commonrail plant, is used. This sends the data now directly to the controller. This constantly adapted to the respective driving conditions, the number of revolutions and the driven course. The controller increased to instruction amh boosters 2 the pressure in Commonrail injection and fits all values optimally on (load pressure, quantity, filler time etc..)! Thus the diesel engine gets further an optimal mixture - calculates from the controller! Apply further all parameters, which the vehicle manufacturer planned as maximum load of the engine - they are not gone around by the amh booster 2. The large Clou is that the driver can determine the desired achievement by adjusting at the provided potentiometer."

How does that lot tie in with your explanation. Diesel technology is pretty new to me.

Basically it changes the data being sent to the ECU so the EMP uses the wrong set of data - that is why it only gains limited power. A remap changes the actual data that the EMP uses and doesnt try to fool anything.

These things are a bit like the 99p resistors you see on ebay (only its more than 1!) that you install on the air flow side to fool the ECU to think that the air is colder than it is and therefore attempt to run the car literally "on choke" - yes you get more power short term but at the cost of various aspects of your engine, then the ECU compensates for it anyway. (This is why the people buying these things actually get some good feedback - they work to start with!)

However if short term cost is your priority a remap cannot compete. £300 for a remap custom made to your requirements or £68 for a case of resistors to fool your EMP. However, how much did the car cost???

There are pro's to your box though. You can take it off yourself and sell it back on ebay like most people with cheap tuning boxes do!

If you would like any more information on remapping (or indeed cheap tuning boxes) please either view our website www.angeltuning.co.uk, drop us an email [email protected] or give us a call 01926 614027

Oh and we do travel to Scotland occasionally dependant on demand.

I don't think Alta Vista's babble fish works as well as the one on the Hitch Hikers Guide!

I didn't realise that some where fitted after the ECU - you learn something new every day! From what I can work out, they are increasing rail pressure, fuel quantity and injection timing (if this means filler time) and this is done the same way as the others - by dicking about with the information being sent to the ECU. I can tell you from first hand experience that the boxes do work very well - they give huge power increases and the power does not drop off in time ref above, however you need to understand that they are a compromise.

I've been running one (not Amh Booster) on an engine with an electronic rotary pump for a year now, however I needed to install a boost gauge to keep an eye on the cylinder pressures. The box was taking the engine way past it's design limits on full load. During normal driving the engine is much more responsive and the box works well but you need to conservative under full load. Would you know if your cylinder pressures were too high?

As I've said before, the biggest issue on comman rail fuel systems when tuning is increasing the common rail pressure. It's the easiest way to get a lot more power however life of the high pressure pump is greatly compromised.

Although Nige is slightly biased (can't blame him really :D ), for £300 I must admit it is a much better option as you'll know exactly what the engine is doing and you can instruct him to leave injection pressure alone (just in case he normally tweaks this too!). The DIY fit power boxes (especially the one with potentiometers like the amh booster) are no good for people who don't understand what the engine is doing.

i have used said magic box for a year now ....A. Power increase more torq faster more economical mid range scares boy racers if its cheap tack well its very good cheap Tack... just a thought ... ;)

Does anybody know where is the commonrail ramp electric plug where the tunning chip has to be connected on an 1.3 MJ Panorama? I can't find it so I suppose is under the air filter box that has to be removed. Is that correct?

I just bought a Tunningkit brand tunning box from Germany for 88 euros and I'd like to give it a try on my Dobbie - I expect some more relaxed ride and low mpg on long constant high speed motorway trips, and also why not some more push for takeovers, although the MJ is quite happy accelerating on country roads as it is for sure.

I was thinking of trying a tuning box on my jtd multipla, could you please tell me the name of the tuning box that you bought, and does it have different settings on it ?

because they dodgy and tell lies :)

Dodgy? Mmmmmmm. i owned Nigel first 156 2.4jtd reg number V308 GTV..
Had it for 4 years till 2008 and showing 120 plus thousand miles. use to see it
in the Area up to about 2010 and i believe it had passed the 130k mark.
there was nothing dodgy about the remap on that car it still passed its Smoke
test on the fast test system [under 150L/m. when i had it
could and did do 50 mpg if you didnt break speed limits doing long runs on A roads. averaged 47 to 49mpg every time we went Italy on 3k round trips and i
certainly didnt drive that slow.. Dodgy? she ran to a real 136mph gps reading
a couple of times bearing in mind it had 30 to 1 gearing in top so was pulling
4500rpm..
"because they dodgy and tell lies" dosnt cut it,if you know something you should back it up not just come out with one liners with no substances!!!

sorry didn't realise how old the original posting was,but from the tone of your response, thanks but it tells me I don't need to waste my time and do a search.!not like
i would learn anything useful

oh you would learn lots, you maybe ok with one of their own cars though they would have paid or blagged people who know what they are doing to put it right.
Sorry you are so funny i really don't know what to say.But then i have had two replies from you stating absolutely no facts to back up your knowledge, sorry opinion on said subject. Although you are right about me learning something, opinions are cheap, knowledge is priceless.but hey you made me laugh out loud so cheers for that at least....

OMG///
this was a gem...."dont use anyone who hasnt got a rolling road. you are better off with a Tmc tunning box than a door step remap" i just cannot stop laughing at the nievity of that statement! it speaks volumes of your experience on the subject, how do you get away with it! a generalization that states such crap! As a standard car comes with what could term a generic map on its ECU to cover the thousands of cars it works on and non are rolling road tested to start with your statement is laughable. sure be weary of a cheap door step remap be weary of a tuning boxes too regardless.....my thank you for your insight!

as said use search, looks like you have lots to learn. also read the forum rules before trying to Belittle TMC

Mmmm nice try! exactly where did i belittle any product? i stated fact concerning how things actually work, if you understood even the basics you wouldn't be making me laugh as much as i have been doing.
One could clearly state you have actually done a little belittling of someone else's products of which you clearly have A, no idea what you are talking about, and B don't seem to be able to explain where your limited opinion came from. Merely you harp on about doing a search!
I am well aware of forum etiquette, but to me what's as important is to get
proper accurate and informative info for others including myself to learn from.
On this topic clearly what i have learned is you don't have a answer to a straight forward question i asked because i was intrigued and instead you start talking poppycock, when on this subject you should really had not bothered replying because the only place you will end is in a huge hole you dug yourself by trying to be a smart ass as you responses to me suggest.

So i ask again exactly how did you come by your statement the one i questioned yesterday? and saying do a search isnt an answer its merely admitting you have no idea what you are talking about.. end of......

 use search, the staff here know i extensively researched the topic and i am within the forum rules as some of them were with me doing the same.

Yep just as I suspected you have squat! research! don't make me laugh any more i will be peeing myself,If you did do any research on this topic you would surely not go writing up stories like what you said to me today quote.

"oh you would learn lots, you maybe ok with one of their own cars though they would have paid or blagged people who know what they are doing to put it right."!!!

the reason i find that soo funny and so would anyone who had even a inkling about that type of stuff. is one would assume to read that type of thing being written by a complete moron, which i am sure you are not and please forgive me for the comparison maybe it is me that's at fault for thinking proof,or some facts and maybe a little on hand knowledge on a subject should be the least one should have at hand before trying to post from a position of authority,so if challenged you have something of substance to back it up. Alas you come up short and not just by a little.

So unless you have something other than "my mate says" I will take it you
really had nothing in the first place, knowledge wise.. and i can move on and ignore you original comments as worthless idle gossip..

Err for what's it worth i haven't had a standard car for well over 2 decades,ECU chips. remaps tuning boxes ect ect, and that's just for starters!!!!!!!!!!!!!
