I’ve got a small amount of gear stick movement (a few millimetres) when accelerating and decelerating. (2006 1.9 Multijet 36k).

Is this normal or the start of something terrible?

Probably normal, best not to hold the gear stick unless your changing gears anyway.

I have a very slight movement only really noticeable in 2nd/3rd gear and feels consistent with the drivetrain flexing slightly in its mountings. I can also feel about 1/2" play at the top of the lever when driving in gear although as another poster has suggested it is not a good idea to hold the lever when driving as it can cause unnecessary internal wear. (1.9 MultiJet 2009 16k)

It would seem this sort of movement is OK, putting it down to normal drivetrain flexing.

I’ve moved across from a RWD vehicle so this sort of characteristic is new to me - probably best to keep an eye on it and let it “develop” if it’s going to.

Had it on my 2003 JTD and now on my 2006 Multijet 120. I wouldn't worry.
