Travelling down to my mate's near southampton & suddenly the engine cuts out. Called breakdown who reckoned the pump had gone.
I called my mate to see if we could take it to his place (half hour away), he's old school mech & still has all the tools etc. He said the pump was 'well worn' (he reckons he could pee with more force) and I'd need new injectors.
He rang a mate in the know but he couldn't help today as his missus wouldn't approve - is something going on that I'm missing? But he'll swing by tomorrow, reckons he should be able to help out.

if pump was worn it would start playing up over time not suddenly fail. More likely complete failure of pump due to mechanical problem however worth going through some basic checks first before pulling out the pump.

I've had small starting problems earlier in the year but put it down to the veg oil & cold weather & everything's been fine 'til now.

The guy came to collect my car this morning, hoiked it onto a trailer & off he went. Got a phone call this morning, it's time for a new pump and set of injectors, he called back this evening with the bad news, reconditioned pump £600 & reconditioned injectors £150 each all plus the dreaded vat.
He reckoned his labour wouldn't be much as my mate put him onto the pump.
So £1200 plus labour plus vat:eek:
My mate reckons the guy's straight up, he's known him forever & says he's done loads of work on diesels over the years.

I was hoping to upgrade to a 10 plate this year but I'll have to keep it a few more years - hopefully nothing else will go wrong.

Update;-
Well, I got the car back & it's all running fine again, got a new pump, injector, filter & seals (I wondered what that fishy smell was, not to mention the incessant honking :D) for £1800 all in.
I gave the pump and injectors a decent clear out on the motorways coming home (just to help them 'bed in' :D).

Got a service and MOT due at the end of the month, on the bright side, I won't be needing a new fuel filter - every cloud & all that?
Perhaps if I give fforfiat.co.uk a shameless plug he'll give me a discount on the service (y) (cough, hint, cough)

Is it down to the veg oil? or the veg oil combined with the cold temps?

Also, you might not want to think about it but were the savings worth it over the mileage it took to wear the pump?

Who knows? There was another poster who'se just gone through the same but he's been using waste veg oil far longer than I have AND using up to 50% mix in the summer.
But if veg oil is so destructive, how about all these people using bio?
That's veg oil with the fats chemically stripped out and people are using that up to 100% - surely the lubrication properties of bio are far lower than wvo & dino?
If you look on the angel tuning website they say it's OK...
"can I use it in my car?
Post 1992 Vehicles
Yes, most definently!

Common Rail Diesels and VW PD Engines
The only issue is with cold starting during the winter. It is suggested that during the colder months, the 75/25 mix is used and to allow the glow plugs to do their job, sometimes two or three times before starting "

Also, more and more people are moving over to bio as prices of dino are rocketing - so will we be seeing more diesels breaking down?
I sent a pm to the other poster & he said his breakdown guy mentioned a lot of problems with bosch pumps - and strangely, the mech who fixed mine said the same thing.
Were the savings worth it? Well, I don't think I saved £1800 over the time I've been adding wvo - the other poster might well have done as he was up to 50% blend & using a blend far longer.

Edit, found Cushioncreeper's thread...

could wear be due to veg oil £1800 would have got you a few dyno diesel litres.

not lubrcating pump like dyno diesel

as said before veg is not perfected yet

http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/vegetable.aspx

"BASED ON THE VE TYPE PUMP BUT USING ELECTRONIC DIESEL CONTROL, COSTLY TO SERVICE SHOULD IT FAIL. REQUIRES UPRATED SEALS TO PREVENT LEAKS AND INTERNAL ALTERATIONS TO INCREASE OPERATING LIFE".
