Hi guys, I am a taxi driver and have recently upgraded my taxi and bought a 1.9 multijet (2007). I really like the car and it drives really well, I have fully serviced the car and replaced a few suspension parts that were a bit worn and the car is driving really well apart from my very poor fuel consumption.
As I said I m a taxi driver and it is costing a bomb to fuel up, my last two shifts I have averaged 20.3mpg and 20.8mpg! I drive sensibly and economically and would expect at least double this!
I have cleaned the egr valve (all is well) and done the sevice but still have the poor consumption.
Any advice much apreciated, thanks in advance.

I have cleaned the EGR, cleaned the throttle body, took off the inlet manifold and cleaned this. I did all this because everything was covered in thick oil!
None of this had made a difference the car is still running at around 22mpg.
Come on guys any suggestions would be a start, cheers,
Pete.

Well - I have an 08 plate 1.9 multijet with 120 BHP and the worst it's ever done was 35mpg. After 30k miles it's now averaging 40mpg so you're right in that there's something wrong. Are you measuring the mpg via the onboard computer? They're notoriously bad, and I swear that ever now and then mine goes into stupid mode where it it only reads half the actual mpg. I half suspect that it's trying to clean the DPF or something like that, but I thought a little light was supposed to come on when that happened and it doesn't on mine.
Try measuring it on a brim to brim run and see if that matches what the onboard computer tells you.

Do you have the 105 or 120hp version?

Pete for the consumption to be this bad there must be a issue, you will need to check air flow meter readings, injector flow rates etc. Might well be worth taking it to a knowledgeable Fiat dealership after all it will save you in the long run.

Not sure if it is the 105 or 120 bhp, it doesn't say on the log book - how can I find out?
I have checked the readings on both the computer and brim to brim and they match up so it is still running at around 20mpg.
I have took it for a good hard run to get the exhaust temps up and clean out the DPF and this did nothing.
Getting a bit stuck now so I have ordered a map sensor and air flow sensor and will see if these make any difference, if not then will get it plugged up.
Any more advice from anyone?

Mine's a 120 and in the last 4 months I have covered 9,150 miles and averaged 37.25 (using brim to brim). Trip computer is usually a few more mpg optimistic. Mostly fast dual carriageway and motorway miles and car has only done 14k since new in 2009.

Hi there have you removed the maf sensor on the inlet (4 inches from egr valve it has a spline drive bolt) have a look inside the sensor and see if its coked up , 9 times out of ten this is the problem and also stops dpf regenerating. Clean out with carb cleaner and scrape dirt out gently with a cable tie you should be able to see down the hole but don`t snap the temp probe off be careful then re-fit and try.

Some people get misled by trying air flow first due to when you unplug it and the car runs better , then fit a new one and it makes no difference they very rarely fail its usually the maf blocked by the coke from the egr valve.

Before you fit any parts try this first (dos`nt cost anything) you may be surprised.

Good luck

Chris

Pete no offence but you really need to get someone to diagnose this issue, your wasting money on guessing and without seeing the car with laptop connector it's impossible to 100% say whats wrong. All this time your wasting money on fuel, sometimes a good dealer is cheaper and quicker in the long run;)
