I have a 2004 Fiat Doblo 1.9JTD which has been brilliant to date. The other day I was going up our drive and suddenly the clutch felt odd and the car would not go into gear. I've checked the break/clutch fluid and there is no fluid loss. I'm assuming something has gone wrong with the clutch hydraulics (although I can't see where anything is in the engine compartment) Any ideas on what the most likely fault is?

check master and slave cylinder. check your pedal. any movement?

master cylinder is right behind pedal. (next to brake cylinder in engine.
slave on top of gear box. (under battery)
also check your master BRAKE/CLUTCH Cylinder.....

any leaks? the clutch's on these things are very strange! :slayer:

Hi,

Check the colour of the fluid, any sign of blackness is a sign of the seals breaking up, (usually slave cylinder gives more trouble than master cylinder...pop off the rubber boot on the slave for any signs of leak). In past have had a strange situation where the slave seals were knackered, but the boot kept the oil in so fluid loss was minimal...(on a Brava that was though).

What happens if you pump the pedal a few times, (to build up pressure), is it any better then?

Difinitive test is if you CAREFULLY, (and to one side), operate the gearbox shaft manually, (it should be pretty/very stiff), can a mate put it in/out of gear?? If he can then problem is external and in the hydraulics, if not, problem is internal and gearbox out. It seemed to happen suddenly though, so would tend to be hydraulic....

Good luck.

Dont want to be the doom and gloom merchant but. Was the clutch release bearing makeing a noise before it stopped working? It makes akind of wizzing noise when you pressed on the clutch pedal. Ours was making a noise for about 6 months and then just gave up when my wife went to put it to gear one night. No warning and unable to select any gear. When the gearbox was removed the bearing had collapsed in a big way and made a hell of a mess. Depending on where you get the job done will determine the cost but its a 10 hour job! plus parts. Also just one word of warning its very easy to put the clutch plate in the wrong way round resulting in no drive! Sorry hope i'm wrong though.
