I'm looking at one of those plug in power things on the bay. It states that it will increase my power from 120 to 150 AND give around 20% better fuel economy. Has anyone tried one of these or have any advise on them? I have a late 08 1.9 multijet and altho the power is ok as it is, a little more wouldn't go amiss and more mpg would be very welcome. Is it worth £70?
Cheers :)

'Power boxes' like the Dragon tuning box (very popular) pretty much all the do the same thing which is fool the engine's ancillaries into thinking it's on cold start all the time. On cold start, amongst other things, the fuel system delivers more fuel until warmed up. So what you always get is an increase in black sooty smoke when you boot it (unburnt fuel).

Some of these boxes do just that and some do a little more to keep the ECU happy but essentially that's what they do.

As already mentioned, I would go down the safest and best route and get a proper map installed, like Angel tuning's. More money but at least you know it will be right and you will probably get better fuel economy from an optimised air/fuel/timing map.

And some of these 'power boxes' are simply a small box with a few wires inserted & then filled with silicon sealant (the wires don't connect on the inside). You connect the wires to the battery or some place else & the placebo effect kicks in.
some, as said above, simply pretend to be something they aren't
And some are just a simple resistor that fools the computer into thinking something is/isn't happening.
There was a report in my local paper from a pucker tuning company (I presume?) saying much the same thing. There are even people who come to you and twiddle with your engine & most have no real idea what they are doing. A reputable company will work with you to balance power/fuel efficiency etc & won't simply crank something up to max just to make you feel good. These companies tend to offer guarantees & will stand by their work - even coming back to make more adjustments if required.

pretty much they just lob more fuel in the engine. ran one on a grande 1.9 multijet and cracked the fuel rail due to more pressure and ive herd alot of other storys the same.... they definatly add more bhp but thats due to just adding more fuel.

i definatly would go for a propper map in the future as it can be dangerous...

however not all people have bad experiences and most seem to run fine. just keep them turned to 1/3 - 1/2 on the dial
