Clutch slip on a 135bhp 1.9 Multijet

The clutch has started to slip on the Doblo Multijet i have just bought.I was told by the last owner he had it re-mapped to 135bhp as he found the standard Multijet slower than his previous Doblo JTD. He used to tow a trailer & i was wondering is it because of this or because the standard clutch can't take the Extra 30bhp.The clutch is fine up till i bring the power in higher up the rev range & then it slips I want to replace the clutch & have seen a few different types for the 1.9td. I won't be using the van to tow anything.

I should think that the combination of towing and re-mapping the engine wouldn't be kind to the clutch. Who knows how it was driven?

The owner was in his 60's. If i replace the clutch with a standard Fiat item would it stand the bhp increase without using the van for towing.

Re: Clutch slip on a 135bhp 1.9 Multijet

Remaps and towing, the twin enemies of clutches! Towing is a real clutch killer, it can have the same effect as loading your car with about eight peopl all the time. A lot of people who have re-mapped their Alfa JTDs complain of slippage (Alfa-Fiat same company) and it proves to be the dual-mass flywheel that's the problem. Apparently (reading the tech info supplied by manufacturers) the mechanism in the DMF includes a sort of safety overload limit that allows the DMF to 'slip' at the limit. This was news to me until very recently as I'd always thought movement on a DMF was physically restricted to about 2" even when worn out. Obviously I know nothing! It's best to change the DMF with the clutch anyway, although it does cost about 250-300 more, but no point doing the clutch if it does'nt work properly. Anyway, in answer to your question would the remap and towing wear out the clutch, the answer is yes and yes.

Re: Clutch slip on a 135bhp 1.9 Multijet

I am more interested in knowing if the standard clutch would be up to the job of taking the 135bhp. I get a slight judder sometimes when i pull away & at motorway speeds when i accelerate hard it judders harder & slips, but if i accelerate slowly theres no slip or judder. Is this the dmf gone or the clutch. I know on motorbikes this is the symptoms of a warped clutch but i've never come accross this on a car or van
