'anorak' on this forum who can kindly give up time to answer burning questions on this almost secretive subject :worship:

- if so I for one would like to get better understanding of the whole subject rather than endeavouring to pick up 'table scraps' from all and sundry - a lot of which I suspect is suspect :bang:

I think "T" explained everything in the other thread on DPF's.
Constant short journeys don't give the DPF long enough to complete a regeneration cycle so you need a long-ish motorway journey now and then.

It would be nice to know exactly how long the cycle takes though so you could time a motorway trip and know that the cycle has completed.

I think it's a huge design fault. Didn't Fiat think that some people might never do long journeys?

With luck, when the new Multijet2 engines, with the added Multiair valve actuation, come in - which may be a while - they'll do without DPFs because the engines will be so inherently clean. I say 'with the added Multiar' because the Multijet 2s will start to be introduced on the 1.3 at the end of this year, but apparently the Multiair heads will only be fitted to the petrols initially.

Give Fiat two years to turn around all their engines.

I read this somewhere on a Fiat Powertain statement by the way.

Multiair won't make much difference to Diesel engine fuel consumption, but it will allow much cleaner fuel burning and this will make the present post-combustion filters redundant. Maybe the EGR valve will go too.

regeneration needs heat, this does not always mean a 20mile blast down the M6 after al the air rushing underneath the car would work against it. The car itself (as I did mention elsewhere) will inject more fuel etc to raise the DP filter's temperature & I often carry out regenerations driving around local council estate. Again the problem is when the regenerations are constantly interupted (they last 400-550 seconds) as mentioned however were just going over old (well few days ago) ground here.

One point is Fiats DPF system is good for the future, VW's solution to their own 'troublesome' system (they ddn't want to pay Fiat for theres) is to cut the DPF's off...not much use for the forthcoming 2010 emissions!
 
volkswagen do not use fiat engines,gm does, although many other manufacturers still use dpf's.

I know VW don't have Fiat engines, they have VW engines, I was just trying to say that (and it must have come out wrong) Fiat are at the forefront of modern Diesel engine technology and that the other big engine makers have copied, or at least followed Fiat's designs.
 
After research by the Fiat the design was acquired by the German company Bosch for completion of development and refinement for production. In hindsight the sale appeared to be a tactical error for Fiat as the new technology proved to be highly profitable. The company had little choice but to sell, however, as it was in a poor financial state at the time and lacked the resources to complete the development on its own.

This refers to the fuel system,not the engine.

Hi, Heres a link for the AA which basically explains everything regarding the DPF on diesels, also, reading some of the old threads on this subject, where they say basically race the car on the motorway that is a myth, all you have to do is drive above 40mph for 10 mins without stopping (not easy with our roads lol) in either 4th or 5th gear

Thanks T for that - despite trying to keep up with the information posted I had not seen that one before. If you complete regeneration whilst driving around at steady speed - how do you get it to regenerate?

That said you must know it needs a regen - presumably from some techie kit - is there anything to tell us it needs a 'regeneration' so we can then make sure we keep driving for the 7 - 10 mins it requires?

The lid at last seems to be being lifted off a subject that we get IMHO a lot of hot air spoken about but not too much of hard facts :bang:

Great for those that buy new when all this future techo comes about - what about those of us still running present engines with DPF's ?????:bang:

Can we stick to the subject matter please to avoid the thread being dragged even thinner.........:confused:
