While driving home tonight from work my doblo cargo 1.9JTD decided that it did not like going into gear!

When i push the clutch pedal down and try to put it into gear (1st or 2nd mainly) it fails to engage. Its like there is something in the way, the gear stick only moves 1/4-1/2 way in to gear (if that makes sense)

I managed to force into gear, with great effort and some crunching noise's .

Lucky i've mad it home. but now trying to put the Van into gear it wont go into any...At all, However, when the engine is off, im able to put the clutch down and put it into gear without a single problem, Engine on, and nothing.

So has my cluch gone, or do i need a new gearbox?

Please do help, im due to work tomorrow and cant afford time off.

Thanks in advance

RR

if the clutch just went without slipping dont they usually burn up and you can smell it ?

if clutch goes then the pedal should feel easier to depress.

if you can select gears when off its probably the clutch.

Can select gear very easy when engine is off.

So that does suggest clutch has gone!!!! :bang:

How much am i looking at for a replacment ?

As far as i know, but i'm not mechanic.

Not had one done yet. Usual is £90 + 6 hours labour.

Make sure you dont get one of the eco non asbestos clutch. They cause doblo clutch judder in damper climates like UK.

Been quoted £380 by Mr clutch (parts and labour inc) , thats the best quote so far.
Seems alot of money

I dont trust franchise or chain repair for any more than brake pads exhausts etc. The problem is you might get inexperienced mechanics. Ok to have trainees at a main dealer where they just have to deal with a couple of dozen types of car.

Remember there are hundreds of types of cars each throwing up their own complexities. Unless Mr clutch give you some kind of written warranty take it to an experienced small motor repairer with long standing reputation. May even be cheaper.

can you start the engine with the car in gear? (with the clutch depressed), if it drags the car forward a little then its either hydraulics or the pressure plate that operates the clutch itself.

my clutch release bearing just failed.... lots of noise was the biggest sign.

but I also had trouble engaging gears, and had to turn off, put in gear then start and drive....

mr clutch did mine, 1300 multijet, I was quoted 440 at most places, but mr clutch quoted 270... (they got it wrong, and were working from reg)

I went with them anyway, because there is a 2 year warranty.... upon reflection the checks are a pain though, you have to go back at 500, 3000, 6000, and 12000 miles, to get the clutch checked, but I suspect it is really to catch paople out who forget...

but as the 500 took a week, and I've done anoyher 850 miles this week, it won't be too long till it's all checked!

good luck

John
