Hi

I have had a Fiat Doblo 1.9 diesel (multijet 7 seater) since last April and cant say I have been too impressed with the fuel economy. Indeed, the Ic fuel consumption on the Trip computer did seem to confirm the fact, especially when driving at lower speeds ( 30 - 40 mph). It says the fuel economy ranges between 10 - 20 miles per gallon when driving. However, at higher speeds this does go up significantly but even so, I don't do a lot of motorway driving. The car has only done 8000 miles but it did have a fuel problem I think after about 3 months where the engine warning light started to come on and so they fiat dealers main garage changes the fuel filter and maybe did something to the computer software (??), still it is a bit worrying though. Is this normal for a car of this engine size even when you just use it for driving around town ? Should the fuel consumption really be this low ??

thanks

my trip computer on a 04 plate 1.2 sx model reads between 29mpg and 35mpg but i am only pottering around town, but when i go fishing to the lakes it does go up to 45 mpg on the motorway on a good run

Ignore what the computer says - its only an indication at best. Do your own calculation to get a much better idea of your fuel consumption.

1. Fill up to the brim. Reset trip odomter.
2. Use normally until nearly empty.
3. Refill up to the brim (same garage/pump if possible).

You now know how much fuel you used to cover the miles recorded on the trip odometer. A quick calcualtion:

Miles covered / Litres of fuel = Miles per Litre.

Multipy this by 4.546 will give you miles per gallon.

If this shows your fuel consumption to be excessive take it up with your dealer.

I've heard a lot of people say that the fuel economy gets much better after the first oil change. Any truth in that?

Some dealers on the first oil change check the fuel mixture ect,. on the puter and reset if required, as sometimes they are not set up correctly from the factory, (Friday afternoon comes to mind)
So maybe, maybe not,
I have 75,000 + miles on the clock of my jtd and average 45 - 49 mpg rural motorway respectively
