In the past, we have kept our cars for years by which time they were worth very little, and have often ended in the great scrapyard in the sky.
Now my husband isn't here to maintain the Doblo, should I change it frequently? Have had this one since Feb 06; it is an 03 plate. It has never missed a beat. The most reliable car I have ever owned (and I'm well over 21!)
My local mechanic advised hanging on to it,for longer. His view is that if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I had been thinking of upgrading to a newer model in a couple of months, but not sure now.

What do you clever guys think?

i think i would be of the opinion of your mechanic if it isnt broke dont fix it!, unless you really want a higher spec in a newer motor i think i wud stick with a proven vehicle! even new vehicles have a fair few problems!

or stay as you are for cheap motoring i wud say :)

Thanks very much for your reply derbydoblo..

Before my husband died in June, he had been mentioning that maybe we should upgrade after a couple of years or so, so as not to have to start completely from scratch like we usually do.
I am reluctant to do this though, as my lovely Doblo has been so loyal, and has never let me down. How do I know the next one would be as good.

I guess I will hang on to it for a while.

This site is a godsend. Thanks guys.

Have to agree. If you have a reliable motor, best to stick with it.
Doesn't matter what the marque, a new motor can give no end of grief.
Remember a few years ago when Skoda were the butt of just about every motoring joke? I knew many people who owned them & swore by their reliability, never having a problem.

I tend to work on the priciple of how much it cost to put through MOT, I'll pay a couple of hundred at the most, look at what else might deteriorate before the next one & then get rid soon after

Hi Lyn. I agree with the other posts...if its working well and you are enjoying-it, I'd stick with it....particularly now we've worked out out to close the rear tailagte without the 100m run-up!

Hi Lyn,
I agree too, if you've got a reliable car then stick with it, especially if you can afford to keep it serviced regulary by a reliable dealer.
Alot of people neglect their cars, which is when the problems arise. Keep the service book up to date and you should be fine.

Thanks Rich
My local mechanic, who is extremely good and very helpful did a complete service and changed the cambelt. Does it really matter if it isn't a Fiat dealer, as long as I keep all the receipts?
By the time I p/ex for a newer one in a couple of years or so, it won't be worth much anyway.
It is really difficult to know what to do for the best.

I would love a sand colour one one day! :)

I really appreciate everyone's comments and support.

I agree, stay with the one you've got if it's reliable.

Every time you change for a new car you're back at the steepest part of the depreciation curve. OK for those with too much money or an ego that needs a newish registration sitting on the drive but a waste of money for the rest of us.

Have you noticed how good 'old' cars are looking these days? Even 10 year old cars that live outside all the time still look good. The advances the manufacturers have made in bodywork is great - If owners do their part and keep the mechanicals well looked after then there is no reason an old car can't be perfectly reliable and presentable.

Thanks very much Niall.:)

I am used to having elderly vehicles around the place.
I recently sold my '66 beetle, my '72 vw bay camper, and my husband's 1982 vw camper. I am not used to having new (even ish) vehicles.
So hanging on to my lovely lovely Doblo, feels 'normal'. ;)

It is the best non vw vehicle I have owned,
My mum (81) loves it too, because she never gets pain when travelling in it. She has osteoporosis, and travelling is usually a big deal, but not in dear Doblo. :D

Thanks guys
Lyn xx
