only had my doblo 7 days and the starter motor has gone on it. Took it back to the dealer i got it from and they are replacing it tomorrow under warranty. Not a good start to my 04 doblo

No it's not but at least your getting it sorted (y)

It could have been used for lots of stop start journeys causing the premature starter motor failure, considering the mileage as well!

Hi i got the dobbie back today. Can anyone tell me where the starter motor is located under the bonnet. I do not trust the dealers i took it back to. I just want to see if a new one has been fitted. Is it at the back of the compartment at the bottomor is that the alternator. Quick reply would be appreciated, ta

Well new starter motor fitted in May and guess what, yes having problems starting it again, its only Dec. It only does it every other week. I get in and turn the key and all i get is a {donald duck sound} is the best way to describe it.It is not clicking like the ususal sound you get. I push the car out of gear and then it will start. Very strange in deed. Took it to the garage today and they think it is the starter motor again. It is still under warranty so taking it back to the car sales people where i got it from. They are looking at it and then deciding what to do.

Why would this happen again. Its done 3000 ,miles since the new starter was fitted.

PLease help

Hi julielew
May be you have a loose connection to the starter motor, Ie the solenoid part of it which has a big lead coming direct from the battery and which would be bolted on,
this could vibrating loose over a period of time, as you say it only happens intimately ,or the solenoid itself could be faulty.
Best of luck getting it sorted.

This used to happen on my doblo every so often but never lead to the starter failing

ok so you are saying because its only intermit that it wont be the starter motor. And why would it start if i just roll the car out of gear. In gear i could understand it moving the starter but out of gear, yes that is strange.ok i will look at all the leads and get the solonoid tested and all the leads and wiring, thanks

As the weather is changing, it's been freezing the last few mornings, perhaps the battery needs looking at?
Winter always takes its toll on the battery - a big diesel engine needs a lot of poke to get it going, especially when the plugs need warming as well & an older battery might not be quite up to par.
Manufacturers try all sorts of tricks to squeeze that bit extra out of batteries - put them in the boot - a bit warmer? Put them at the rear of the engine compartment. Wrapping them in insulating material.

Just a thought.

Yes my doblo was second hand but you expect the dealers to check it over first. It has all been done under warranty anyway and it has been doing it all the time on and off so it wont be the cold weather cos it was doing it in the summer. Well its booked in next wed now so let them sort it thats what warranties are for

Dont be so suspicious Julielew, course your car was checked but as mentioned fault was intermittent & no dealer is stupid enough to say they have replaced a starter when the haven't.

Relax (your cars under warranty as you rightly state) & enjoy your car:)...post up some pics of it with the rest of the doblo crew:D

Ok got it back from the dealers and they say they cannot find any fault with the car at all. That was at the end of November, Its gone all the way to 6th January and yes i get in it this morning and it wont start first turn of the key. I roll it out of gear and it starts. Been ok till just now 15.00 hours on the 10th January and its done it again. Someone out there must be able to help me and know what the problem is. Also on the times that it is not starting the clutch seems a bit slippy and it feels like the car has kangeroo juice in if you know what that saying means.

T14086, what makes you say about the ignition switch needs replacing upon a new starter motor on a new shape doblo ??

litterely just finished a job, a Fiat dealer fitted a starter motor to an 07 plate doblo - no ignition switch, a month or so later the starter goes again so he brings it to us for a starter motor and to find the cause under warranty. Did wiring checks, all ok, no voltdrop, usual gubbins, remove the starter and found grease, so im thinking dual mass flywheel... contact technial who wern sure whether it had a dual mass or not, said it was a 50/50 chance... so popped the box off and yup, dual mass had dumped its load every where. 1 new dual mass and 1 new starter motor, jobs a goodun..

so my response... julie, if it does occur again, ask them to check for grease within the starter motor, or even give them a ring and ask them to check, as unless the technician knows about the fault they wont look ... only reason i know is that Fords are really common for dual mass flywheel failure and damaging starter motors so its something i check when diagnosing. (will either show up as a dark grey\black grease with shiney metal particles in it)

Hmm this is sounding rather familiar.

I've just fitted a new starter motor to my sisters 54 plate Doblo 1.9 JTD as she was told it needed a new one and guess what, still will not start. The old starter was definitely duff, but I have tested the new one out of the car and it's fine but it back in the car and it won't start. The solenoid clicks a few times almost like it's not engaging the flywheel. I've tried bypassing the ignition switch completely to rule that out and it won't start either.

The gearing on the flywheel felt OK, not obvious damage. Didn't notice any grease but I'll go check that now.

Any other suggestions?
