Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

Hi guys!

I bought a used Croma (2.0i.e., 16V, gas+LPG) about a year ago and I have the following problem:

The engine won't go above 4000rpm in any gear (regardless of type of fuel used).
I've replaced most electronic components: ECU, junction cap with cables, air flow regulator and spark plugs but the problem still persists.
The only thing that's left is to change the engine and/or the complete wiring installation.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Sorry if some of technical terms aren't correct because English isn't my native language.

Re: Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

I assume this is an old Croma, pre 2005 and thus a petrol and not diesel engine?

I know, question seems silly but just want to clarify for everybody.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. Year of production is 1996 and it's a petrol engine, but it also has natural gas (LPG) installed and the problem manifests on both of them.

My Mk1 (1985-1991) Croma suffered from a similar problem that I traced to water getting into the Full Power Enrichment Device from the radiator expansion bottle.

I'm not sure whether the Mk2 (1991-1996) Croma was fitted with the FPED but it could be worth checking. It's a black box situated directly below the expansion bottle.

Re: Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

Thanks for the information Davren.

I will try to find that box in my car.
BTW can you tell me what this FPED really is?
I'm having trouble finding any info on the net.

Unfortunately, my car has quite a few different components than yours.
I'll take a picture of my motor and upload it tomorrow.

Re: Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

It's a device to enrich the fuel at full power to give better acceleration at higher speeds.

Mine was a 2000 Turbo ie which could explain why it looks different to you car. I'm not sure whether the FPED was fitted to all models or only the turbo version.

Re: Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

Hm, I thought it would be something along those lines...
My Croma is not Turbo version so I guess I don't have that part.

BTW I'm dying for a manual with schematics of my version of Croma (MK2 as you said)...

I have a Mk1/Mk2 pdf workshop manual but it's written in Russian. I also have the original Fiat workshop manual in English.

If you ever need anything particular, I can scan and send you a few pages.

Re: Croma 2.0i.e. 4000rpm problem

The problem that you describe is either MAF (which you say you have changed) or throttle cable. Check that the accelerator (throttle) pedal goes all the way to the floor. Your cable could be snagging somewhere. If not it could be a sensor or wiring problem.
It's very unlikely to be an engine fault.
I would love another Mk 1/2 Croma - I had 2 x Turbo i.e's and 2 x 2.0 i.e's

I have a 1986 mk1 fiat croma 2.0ie turbo, 1 owner from new, 95k genuine in original turbo blue colour. I'm looking to get it on the road or maybe sell it. What are these worth? The engine gearbox and body are all good just needs MoT as it expired last year!

I would love another one! My first one was silver and then I got a blue one
It used to give Impreza's and Sierra Cosworths a nasty surprise! I sold it when I bought my 16v Integrale. I always wanted a mk11 Turbo ie but they were very rare in the UK. You should MOT it and bring it to one of the shows.
