Croma would't start this morning . Flat Battery. Battery is a Banner about 18 months old.

I have one of these cheap voltage meters that plug into the cigarette socket and with the engine running (after a jump start) reads between 8-9.5 volts. The 9.5v when the engine is revved quite hard.

So, is it the battery or the alternator - which was changed 7 years ago.

The charging light on the dash does what it is supposed to, i.e. it goes off once the engine starts to run so I am assuming that the alternator is ok.

Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried the voltmeter in another car? It should read at least 13V. If it works in another car then you have a problem.

If the warning light goes out it's likely to be a bad connection rather than an actual alternator fault. Do a visual check at the battery connector (see other post) and on back of alternator.

You would need better meter to do further checks.

Hi

Took battery off at the week end and fully charged. it. Left it for a day and checked the voltage, still at 12v. I then attached a load tester with good results so not the battery.

Car started well and all the warning lights were off and no issues with the charging light staying on. Ran it around the block a couple of times and when I got back home thought I would check the cable was still fully connected, but so cramped down there I couldn't find it. However the alternator body was very hot to the point I could not keep my had on it for very long. So, I am pretty sure the alternator is scrap.

Just been quoted £400 plus VAT by my garage (an independant). So probably will have to do it myself, again. I fitted a Denso about 6 years ago and boy was it a pain. Would anyone know which is the correct alternator for my 1.9 diesel 8 valve as the car spares people are not sure which is the correct one.:(

Hi,
If you send me your VIN (private meassage is best for security) I can check on ePer for you. If you think the 8V alternator change is a pain try doing it on a 16V!
