Broken down various fault codes

Hi All,
Another problem with the Croma, this time it was running ok and then just stopped completely.

Error codes per mes are as follows:
P0340 phase sensor camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. Fault is now not detected but stored in memory. Engine temp was 86.7 Deg c fuel pressure 588 bar boost pressure 1788mbar engine speed 1196 rpm.
P2293 fuel pressure. Fault is present now engine temp 86.7 Deg c fuel pressure 91 bar boost pressure 1116 mbar engine speed 1288 rpm
P0087 pressure on injector support fault not present now but stored in memory. Engine temp 86.7 Deg c rpm 1058 fuel pressure 70 bar boost pressure 1068 mbar
P2294 Fuel pressure. Fault is present now. Engine temp 72.7 Deg c. Engine speed 276 rpm fuel pressure 7 bar boost pressure 984 mbar.

When trying to turn it over it makes a rapid high pitched sound when trying to turn over.

I suspect it might be related to the starting problem I've been having recently.

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Sounds like it might be the high pressure fuel pump. What is the desired fuel pressure, actual fuel pressure and regultor opening when you are cranking?
I assume youve checked the obvious like cambelt?

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Hi Robert
Didn't even think to check the cambelt 😮

What would I be checking it for?

I'll look at that before I try anything else but I guess if it is the cambelt it might be too late already???

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Would also add that you have several related and unrelated fualt codes.

All modern cars, Croma included, are very sensitive to good quality electrical supply. Anything less than ideal can and will result in all sorts of error codes.

Suggest you check battery state, battery connections and chassis earth strap.

Regarding battery Halfords (and possibly others) will check battery condition for free and you are not obliged to buy a battery from them if it yours fails. My Halfords and I presume all national braaches use the same/similar testing kit. They enter your battery make, model, etc. on their kit, run the tests and give you the results in a printout.

Rest is up to you.

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Hi,
Sorry to hear the belt has snapped. Virtually all diesels are "interference" engines so valves can touch the pistions. The mJTD is supposed to have weak points in the rocker arms to prevent major damage. But it will need investigation.

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Cheers Robert appreciate it.

I'm guessing that means opening it up?

I've looked at a couple of posts on other websites and which suggest changing the pump and belt and giving it a try just in case. It was doing about 25 at the time. Sensible suggestion in your opinion?

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Hi,
Sensible if you can do it yourself. Ideally check the valve clearances first. If the rockers or valves a bent the clearance will be large.

eLearn implies its easy to get the tappet cover off.
1/ Plastic cover off.
2/ remove 2 vapour pipes
3/ remove bolts

But there is no drawing.
Camshaft cover looks like a bit more work.

Robert you are a star.

I'm trying to find a YouTube video but I'm obviously not typing in the right combination of buzzwords and can't find one.

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Hi Robert, once I've got the rocker cover off, if the rockers are damaged how obvious should the damage be?

Re: Broken down various fault codes

Very obvious! Rockers snapped in half. As before, check valve clearances.massive gap means bent valves.
