Hi All,
Another problem with the Croma, this time it was running ok and then just stopped completely.

Error codes per mes are as follows:
P0340 phase sensor camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. Fault is now not detected but stored in memory. Engine temp was 86.7 Deg c fuel pressure 588 bar boost pressure 1788mbar engine speed 1196 rpm.
P2293 fuel pressure. Fault is present now engine temp 86.7 Deg c fuel pressure 91 bar boost pressure 1116 mbar engine speed 1288 rpm
P0087 pressure on injector support fault not present now but stored in memory. Engine temp 86.7 Deg c rpm 1058 fuel pressure 70 bar boost pressure 1068 mbar
P2294 Fuel pressure. Fault is present now. Engine temp 72.7 Deg c. Engine speed 276 rpm fuel pressure 7 bar boost pressure 984 mbar.

When trying to turn it over it makes a rapid high pitched sound when trying to turn over.

I suspect it might be related to the starting problem I've been having recently.

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Sounds like it might be the high pressure fuel pump. What is the desired fuel pressure, actual fuel pressure and regultor opening when you are cranking?
I assume youve checked the obvious like cambelt?

Robert G8RPI.

Hi Robert
Didn't even think to check the cambelt ?

What would I be checking it for?

I'll look at that before I try anything else but I guess if it is the cambelt it might be too late already???

Would also add that you have several related and unrelated fualt codes.

All modern cars, Croma included, are very sensitive to good quality electrical supply. Anything less than ideal can and will result in all sorts of error codes.

Suggest you check battery state, battery connections and chassis earth strap.

Regarding battery Halfords (and possibly others) will check battery condition for free and you are not obliged to buy a battery from them if it yours fails. My Halfords and I presume all national braaches use the same/similar testing kit. They enter your battery make, model, etc. on their kit, run the tests and give you the results in a printout.

Rest is up to you.

Thanks S130, timing belt snapped.

Anybody have any suggestions to check whether my 8v 120 is wrecked?

Looks like the water pump might have siezed. Not that old either, full skc timing belt kit from ecp a few years ago.

Cheers Robert appreciate it.

I'm guessing that means opening it up?

I've looked at a couple of posts on other websites and which suggest changing the pump and belt and giving it a try just in case. It was doing about 25 at the time. Sensible suggestion in your opinion?

Hi,
Sensible if you can do it yourself. Ideally check the valve clearances first. If the rockers or valves a bent the clearance will be large.

eLearn implies its easy to get the tappet cover off.
1/ Plastic cover off.
2/ remove 2 vapour pipes
3/ remove bolts

But there is no drawing.
Camshaft cover looks like a bit more work.

Robert you are a star.

I'm trying to find a YouTube video but I'm obviously not typing in the right combination of buzzwords and can't find one.

Hi Robert, once I've got the rocker cover off, if the rockers are damaged how obvious should the damage be?

Cheers multipete. By massive is that more than a few mm or is it going to be really obvious as soon as I get the rocker cover off?

Very obvious! Rockers snapped in half. As before, check valve clearances.massive gap means bent valves.

Yes this is what I would expect, based on all the eLearn technical information.

However I've not actually comes across or been in contact with anyone who has had a cam belt fail on the 1.9 16V MJet engine or discussed this with any Fiat master tech.

In theory when the belt fails the valves, driven via rocker arms, as compared to a true overhead cam engine, are designed to fracture. For this to happen 100% successfully then the piston face and valve face must be absoluted 100% paralell to each other and the valve stems not suffer shock/compression expansion.

With a bit of luck Brian all will be well. You won't know 100% unless you were to completely strip the head down, bench roll valves, test valve seat laps, etc etc.

Best you can do is replace broken rockers (I would suggest all as some may have had a lite, semi hard shock but not fractured) and then run a compression test. You could skip compression and go for driver performance.

"The Choice Is yours" as they say :)

Thanks s130. Had a go at getting the rocker cover off but am struggling, partly because it's now dark, cold and still very windy.

I got the 6 torx bolts undone no problem and the small 10mm bolt that holds the small bracket undone easily as well but what else would be holding it in place?

Another rookie question - do I need to remove the injectors?

I can't find a YouTube video for this engine anywhere.
