Anyone with an Automatic Croma ever had problems with play in the gearbox differential causing the well know Croma wobble (side to side shaking when accelerating from 40mph) ?

I know all about the drive shaft problems, but I have already had 1 brand new complete drive shaft on the near side due to hitting a massive 8" deep pot hole with both near side wheels, (long story). Only after hitting the pot hole did the car start to shake. I find it crazy to think the o/side drive shaft could have been damaged by hitting a pot hole with the near side wheels, but it did lots of damage to tyres, wheels, and the suspension arm.

car has been to 2 garages today

garage 1) its been on their rolling road, running under load. All that showed was the whole engine was shaking badly from side to side when accelerating under load from 15-20mph and from 40-55 mph.

garage 2) re checked all engine mountings and with a long bar and forcefully trying to move the engine side to side and up and down, it showed very little movement. There is very little play in either of the drive shafts with the wheels on the ramp, however when the front of the car is lifted off the ramp their is noticeable up and down (not in and out) play coming out of the gearbox diff. I am told a little play in and out of the diff from the n/side inner shaft is to be expected due to the circlip fitment into the diff.

Really out of my depth here and need your help. Either the new drive shaft is out of balance, and so was the old one after hitting the huge pot hole or perhaps the impact has transferred via the n/s front wheel and damaged the diff.

Hi,
I hate to state the obvious, but you have had the wheels checked for balance and damage?

yes tried another set of wheels and tyres and its exactly the same. Its odd but it shakes more when the cars hot on a long run. Changing n/s strut top bearing seems to have reduced the shaking slightly.

Ours is doing the same mines in the garage at present trying to get a new drive shaft but can’t seem to find one anywhere for the automatic version. Do you know where I could get one from please it’s 1.9 diesel 150bhp automatic they won’t put a vectra one on cheers

Hi it’s the right offside shaft rang fiat and they said it’s 2 parts and it’s best part of £900-£1000. It’s in German so didn’t understand what it said my comp only converted half of it cheers

2 brand new complete inner and outer drive shafts fitted. The o/s one was fitted last that was around 4 weeks ago. After fitting there was a 90-95% improvement, only a very slight shaking could be felt through the floorpan, but after 1500 miles the bad shaking is back again, now from 35-45mph. Any idea's ? My guess is its the auto gearbox. I think the wobble/movement has damaged the new new o/s driveshaft.
