Croma steering lock disabled message.

Croma failed mot today as steering lock isn't working plus dash message of steering lock disabled. Found a few steering locks on ebay but mainly for 1.9. Can anyone confirm part numbers for 1.9 and 2.4 croma steering locks?

Hi,
Not that easy, The lock is part of the CODE security system and is coded to the body computer, ECU and key reader. You either need new lock from Fiat (possibly already set to the cars CODE), a virginised unit or change all four units and the keys.

More inportantly a disabled steering look is not grounds for a MOT failure on a Croma as it has an engine immobiliser fitted as standard. Per section 2.1 of current manual:
"It is acceptable for a steering lock to be missing or inoperative provided the vehicle has an engine immobiliser, or permanently installed immobilisation device which acts on either the steering, brakes or the transmission"

Take it back to the garage and complain. If that does not work place an appeal. For anything that is questionable the benifit of doubt goes to owner.
The "Fiat CODE" section of the manual confirms the car has an engine immobiliser.

Happy to help,
If they say that they think it could be dangerous, i.e. come on when driving, tell them it has been taken off the colunm.

Re: Croma steering lock disabled message.

Garage are refusing to back down. First the guy wouldn't believe me that my croma has an immobiliser. Eventually after shoeing him the owners manual he backed down on that part but now he won't pass it while it still shows steering lock disabled message with key out of ignition if you turn the wheel.

Spoken to dvsa three times today and each time they've told me my car should have passed.

I've now given up trying to reason with the garage and I've started a dispute about me mot result through dvsa.

Re: Croma steering lock disabled message.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with the garage, but glad you have complained to DVSA. The MOT tester is supposed to give you the benefit of any doubt. You could try another garage to get back on the road. If you do it might be best to explain the steering lock issue when you take it in.
Let us know how you get on.

Re: Croma steering lock disabled message.

Steering lock fixed took dash apart this morning to get to it. Tapped shear bolts round with a punch. Put the lock in a vice punched the tamper proof screws open. Found the lock pin was a bit rounded not from wear but due to a poor quality casting. Put the pin in a vice and filed it so it's got nice square edges. Reassembled and fitted back on the car. All seems to work fine.

Just got to sort mot out now. Dvsa are so slow replying about mot dispute probably quicker to just re mot at another garage.
