Several weeks ago whilst driving my 96,000 miles Fiat Croma Eleganza 1.9 JTD MultiJet 16V Turbo Diesel 150bhp manual, gently at about 50mph, I noticed a continuous droning / humming noise.

We can't reliably identify which part of the car this noise comes from – front or rear, off or near.

The noise is not noticeable until about 40mph but the noise is always there.

My trusted mechanic has had the car up on ramps and checked all wheel bearings and found no faults.

We've replaced both rear tyres but the continuous droning / humming noise is still there.

There is no vibration, the car runs smoothly and steers well.

The car is regularly serviced, most recently 2 months ago.

Any ideas?

Hi,
First off change the gearbox oil. If it's getting low the 'box wil get noisy. You can't actually check the level, you have to drain the 'box and refill with th correct quanity of oil (2.4 litres of SAE 75W-85 - API GL-4). Note the qty in the owners manual is wrong, they seem to have increased the oil level. I think this is why what looks like a level check plug on the side of the gearbox is below hte oil level and can't be used.. If you have trouble getting the oil look for Vauxhall, it's the same M32 gearbox in the Vectra C. Drive shaftss tend to be alower runbling noise with steering vibration. The gearbox oil isn't cheap but it's not a difficult job and worth doing anyway I did mine eariler in the year and it cured a drone.
