has yours fallen to bits inside? if not it may just need removing and cleaning, this can be done with brick cleaner.
you could also get it mapped out of the system and then just smash the insides out. for map its £150 egr gets deleted at the same time http://www.tune4performance.com/
i've just fitted one to my 150 multijet and it said in paperwork it fits a vectra c as well but the small pipes aren't quite right and you may have to stretch them to fit. Also i seem to remember i had to do some resetting with Registered Multiecuscan to say i've fitted a new Dpf. But as Dave says it's cheaper to do the smash/clean. Mine was £230 there are cheaper ones out there but buyer beware
Yes MOT is visual check only. In addition the smoke test pass/fail criteria is the same as for a normal diesel without DPF (well it was when I had my Croma).
I'm fairly sure my DPF was internally failing as during the latter years of ownership (from new) I could over time smell and then start to see exhaust fumes.
When the car was new I did actually hit a rock in a mountain pass layby in the Italian Dolomites. This contact severed the front temperature sensor wire casing an immediate engine error. Also damaged the exhaust heat shield. Also put a smooth dent about 5 cm long and about 0.5cm deep in the bottom of the DPF. It is quite possible that this dent damaged/weekend the internal honeycomb core and it started to disintegrate over time.
The car would still do regenerates but less frequently so there was still enough inners present to satisfy the differential pressure measuring system.
I guess the rock incident initiated a self removal of the DPF
