I hate posting this but me and my beloved Croma will tomorrow give birth to a new 500x Cross Plus.

Trust me there are tears in our eyes at saying goodbye to our Croma but at 9 plus years old (from new), annual Euro trips hauling a caravan to Italy, 10 year Euro insurance/recovery limits, and obvious impending bills for original exhaust, DPF, rear discs & pads, etc. it makes sense to act now.

I of course will still visit and chip in here for the near future but I guess I'll have to be more active in the 500X arena.

I still/do have Croma parts/spares/cam tools etc. and I'll review what I intend to do with them.

Only the other week I put a new Denso 140A alternator in my Croma and have the old unit which I believe is still good (I intend to see if it can be tested for free). Good or bad it has an exchange value £50 plus pounds.

For any Croma owners / readers / etc. then I just want to add that the Croma, despite the issues/comments/etc posted here, the car is one hell of a good performance/size/value/etc. Fiat wagon not to be ignored. They also pull like trains which one can only really judge (like I have) when you are hauling an extra 1000kg+ behind you up steep inclines in German Barvaria and Italian Dolomites.

So guys and gals I wish you all well and I'll not forget you all.

OMG this has turned grim.Im going to shed a tear for you.Time waits for no man and like yours my old girl is maturing,Fast.Trouble is what do you buy after a 5 potter. We looked at a 500x too, nice choice.Just a bit too light for our van.
For me,mine will be staying after the amount ive just spent with the uprated turbocharger, dpf ,egr delete and remap of gus.Just goes to show how strangled these engines are.I hope it turns out really good for you.

The new 500X will be the 1.4 Petrol 140BHP model with Manual transmission and Traction+

I've waited a long time for Fiat to bring a new model along with the engine and the legal towing capacity we need. Fortunately our streamlined all steel Eriba van is only 1000kg so with the 500X allowed to haul 1200kg we are right on the money with 85% of legal loading capacity, 76% van to vehicle weighting and still have a further 200kg capacity should we ever need it.

The Croma was and is a fantastic wagon, particularly when mapped. It's a pity that it arrived at a time when Fiat didn't have a clue as to it's heritage or future.
My wife has a 500L and we are both very taken by the 500X.
Best of luck and I will visit the 500 page to see how you are getting on.
I don't see as much homework being done on those(hopefully)

thats a lot of hourses out of a 1.4 same as the 2ltr multijet, how do they compare on torque?

Well having just driven a few miles all I can say is:

With the Mood/Mode selection in Auto then the car appears to driver/pull/accelerate smoothly on partial throttle settings.

In the Sport mode it actually took me aback a little as the difference between Auto and Sport was like walking/riding a Cart Horse and walking/riding an Italian Stallion Horse.

If all the Fiat hype about Multiair producing low down torque/tractability and top end power performance is true (and it seems to be thus far but I've yet to really try - got running in - acclimatisation - tow bar & caravan drag tests to do yet) then thus far I'm impressed.

Well I'm hoping I never have to post anything other than sound advice, praises, etc. I'm also hoping most if not all of the GM *rap/gremlins that all but destroyed the Croma experience are a thing of the past.

P.S

Being a Fiat Motor Club (GB) member I was able to buy my new baby under the Group Affinity Scheme (for Fiat employees etc.) Basically I got a £2750 contribution from Fiat to upgrade from a cheaper 500X model to the one I finally purchased. All for a £25 FMC membership subscription.

Other models have fixed discounts, possibly up to 30%+

For anybody thinking of buying a new Fiat (family members are also covered / entitled) then join the Fiat Motor Club (GB). There is no membership time clause. Pay your £25 joining the club and get all the benefits of the Affinity scheme.

Just visit http://fiatmotorclubgb1.netfirms.com/forum.htm#bn-forum-1-1-3446348668/24/810248/show or web search "fiat affinity scheme"

Sorry to see you go but good luck with the new Fiat. Not sure I'm brave enough to buy another Fiat, mind you, so fair play to you for that ;)

The 500's a smart looking car and as you say without the GM parts hopefully you'll have an easier time with it.

Can't quite get my head round how they can get so much power out such a small engine but engine technology's progressed so much over the last few years - it doesn't seem that long ago that the power from the multijets was quite impressive.

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions over the years, my Croma would no doubt have been scrapped a long time ago without them.

Well I'm also pleased as my Croma is most probably being bought by the fiat Technician who looked after it when in warranty. He also did the clutch replacement when the cover plate let go.

So I'm sure he'll no doubt be able to fix / put up with any future gremlins and not be inclined to just let the old girl be run into the ground.
