Hi. I have an 8 valve 1.9 Croma. Have owned it for nearly 6 years. Apart from servicing it and replacing normal consumables it has perform perfectly, I am therefore disappointed that the Gearbox has developed what appears to be a major fault. Noise in 2nd and 5th gears and loss of 6th. Have read the thread on gearbox problems and see Firefox had similar problems and got the Gearbox fixed but did not post details informing us of a repair or replacement and costs, despite details of the solution being requested. Firefox, if your still a contributor to this site perhaps you would be kind enough to give details of the fix and how your getting on with the vehicle since repair. If anyone has had their gearbox out or had it taken out, do you have to remove the engins and gearbox as one or can you get the box out without removing the engine? Any help appreciated. Kadee.

This is a follow up of my previous post regarding Gearbox problems on my 1.9 8 valve Diesel Croma. I took my vehicle to a local Gearbox specialist, diagnosis " common problem " on GM M32 Gearbox. Repair involved replacement Gearbox, because the failure damage renders the gearbox casing non reuseable, Hydraulic Release Bearing assembly, Clutch and Oil. 5.5hrs labour £1827.30 including VAT. Warranty 12 months or 12,000 miles. As one of the other members on this site said " you can't buy an alternative vehicle with the same spec for the same price, or anywhere near it ". As I agree with this sentiment I went ahead with the repair. Good to have it back, albeit I'm not realising the benefit yet as my son is using it, while I put more miles on my 159 2.4 Diesel Q tronic. Another great Italian Car.

Cost of gearbox build appears to out value the car surely

I thought they used the same box as vectra c etc but I stand to be corrected

Anyway at least you are back on the road :)

Hi Kadee that's quite a Bill (Gulp!), while sorting out what gearbox is fitted to Croma's I stumbled across all the m32 gearbox failures routine on the alfa 159's and frequent with astras and zafiras. We have 108k miles no trouble yet with our gearbox so was wondering if anyone else has had trouble. From what I have read it is important to fix the gearbox as soon as it makes noise! as the problem bearings are cheap enough but the case that they run in is not!..ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Croma-M32-uprated-gearbox-repair-kit-contains-9-bearings-5-seals-3-circlips-/111501017026?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19f5fa7fc2
If our box failed i will think about replacing it with an f40 gearbox as they seem free of trouble and are cheap and plentiful with our mileage the dmf is on browed time and the f40 vectra drive shafts are the best of the bunch. Getting the box out is a big job and involves dropping the sub frame and is not a pleasant job.
