So after my water ingress problem my heater fan is squeaking.
2006 1.8 petrol.

Do I have to buy from FIAT (I don't like going to them after an incident) or can I get it online anywhere?

Any makes I should avoid?

Thanks, I'll double check the part numbers. That price isn't too bad.

The squeak is annoying me, even though it isn't there all the time.
I can't be bothered to try to repair.

Hi,

My heater fan is now completely dead. Fuse is fine.
I am about to go on holidays and would obviously prefer it to work!

The link above brings me to an eBay item, but when I select Fiat Croma it says it won't fit.

I have some part numbers off the fan unit but 73421312U is actually just the resistor unit, perhaps I have to take the whole thing out to get the full part number?

How do I definitively get the actual part number... give my chassis number to FIAT? Would prefer to avoid that, but I do not want to buy the wrong item and it's confusing me, what with GM/Vectra/Saab mentions....

Thanks.

OK so I am trying to remove this thing.
I have taken out all the screws I can see and now there seems to be 2 clips and I'm not sure how to release them.

One is hidden near the glovebox back wall... do I need to remove the inside of the glovebox to access??

I do not want to break any clips resulting in not being able to get the new one back in properly!

Thanks

I had water in through the pollen filter, the little drain pipe from the windscreen rubber was off and the water drain below it was blocked. This blew the heater controller.

Mine was changed without removing any parts of the glove locker.

OK I'll have another look tonight.

I did take off the heater resister box thing and it looks nice a clean inside with not water damage or burning, so i'm assuming I need the fan/motor unit.

Hi you might need both the motor and the resistor as the fuse did not blow. The motor is a simple ring magnet type, and I think if it were seized it would blow the fuse or upset the resistor. I had two goes at fixing our motor but I eventually bought newish motor. The motor is handed as I discovered when I fitted a left hand drive one to our right hand drive Car (It sucked instead of blowing) and it took me some head scratching  to make a good motor from the old and the new ish one. Some good water proof grease on the bearings would help.

I have priced up a new motor/fan/housing from my local FIAT dealer at EUR215 which is about GBP125/130.

I'm assuming I get the housing, fan, motor and resistor with this!
If the resistor isn't included then I hope mine works. It is spotless inside and no burning marks etc.

Hi again before spending i would test the motor there are two pins that you can connect straight to a battery if it spins then it's the resistor at fault you will have to get it moving if it has seized though. There are three small cap screws that hold the motor in the bottom case with the resistor out pull the motor and fan out you can get at the bottom bearing which may be the problem as it sits in a pool of water. I took the carbon brush brush pack apart as part of my drama power is supplied to the brushes via to small coils wrapped around carbon rods suppressors I suppose. On ebay item 221783971074 is a motor and resistor which may be a straight fit or all the parts to fix yours.

Hi Telegraph,

I have done just that!

Took it all out and the fan can spin when hooked up to the battery.
But I cannot get it to spin when hooked up to the 2 spades on the 4 spade resistor block (I assumed the 2 thick black/red cables were the right ones and not the smaller wires for signals?)

I'm not sure if the EUR215 I was quoted would have included the resistor.

Either way... the fan was squeeking, so unless I can get the resistor separately and then somehow successfully lubricate the fan then perhaps I am better off getting both?

To lubricate the fan, do I need to remove it from the shaft and clean/lube? The shaft looks rusty at both exposed ends.

There doesn't seem to be any wear to the plastic housing and the fan has not dropped and is not rubbing against the housing.

That eBay item has the same part number as mine for the resistor but there seems to be a distinction between those with auto aircon and those without. I am loathe to take a chance TBH.

Anybody know how much a new resistor costs, even in the UK?

Search this forum - I swapped mine OK. I bought mine from a SAAB dealer that was clearing stock. You can also use a Vectra one.

Avoid used ones - they're usually knackered, and it's a pain to fit. I also tried a Euro Car Parts cheapo equivalent, and it was crap.

Mine had climate control, but I bought a fan intended for manual air con and swapped the new fan/motor into the old housing. The fans are the same, only the housing and resistor/control packs differ. The climate control housing has a hole in a different place.

LHD and RHD are not swappable, as they spin in opposite directions I believe.

Help!

I rang my local FIAT dealer and asked for a heater resistor. He said it was 50eur, which was cheap I thought.... and quizzed him, and it turns out that is is a small green plastic thing.

This is not what I thought was the heater resistor. He has sent me a diagram and his part seems to come from up behind the fan housing. He is saying part 77363759

The part I thought was broken for me comes from underneath the fan motor and is the metal/black plastic narrow box that plugs into the fan motor, and the loom. What is this really called?

I though this was broken, because the fan would not spin when I ran power through this..... but it was outside of the car... perhaps I need to have the green resistor in place for testing???

I'm lost here now and am not sure what to buy!

I'm worried I will fit the more expensive part and then when I turn it on perhaps my resistor will cause it to fail immediately.

I did have a root around for that 'green' resistor and didn't see anything, which I had it all dismantled.... perhaps I was blind?

I'm hoping they have made a mistake and I only have the 1 part.

edit: now he is telling me that The fan/fan motor/housing and this controller are 1 part.
I have given him part number 73421312 but it isn't coming up for him, so perhaps it has already been replaced in my car with a non FIAT part?

The green thing is a heater resistor wich is probably for a non- AC or non - climate controlled car. The large silver item is a fan controller which is for an AC / Climate equipped car. This is probably the falty item. If yours looks like the ebay one it might be worth going for unless the dealer is not much more expensive. Give the dealer the VIN of the car and ask for a price for the fan /controller assembly. If it's the wrong one when you go to pick it up don't pay, he's the "expert"

Thanks.

This is what is confusing me. I have given my dealer the car details and he is telling me there is a heater resister and a 'fan controller' which will be incorporated with the fan motor housing as one part number.

I am sure there is no heater resistor, but I'm about to head out to take it apart again and have a good look around. I will follow all wires in the area.

If there is no resistor there I guess I will just order the fan housing and controller in one part, as the fan has prob only be temporarily lubricated by myself.

I did tell him I had an auto climate car.

I have to go on a trip soon and being in Ireland don't have to time to wait for parts to ship from the UK.

Panic over.
I rang an indie FIAT outfit and he found it the part straight away but said his stick lookup system with FIAT was down and gave me another number to ring.

They have found one in the UK and should have it on Monday.

They used 77363724.

I know my fan was squeezing and I lubricated it a bit, hopefully it will not burn this out too soon. I'll prob get a new fan unit to be safe when funds allow!

He said it was definitely the same as the Opel/Vauxhall part.

Might be a Valeo number, Fiat use a lot of Valeo parts.
When I needed a radiator fan relay system it had a Valeo number which was not listed on Valeo site, but was supplied from Fiat Italy. The part was £150, but as its different for the 2.4 and only about 30 of these in UK no wonder it took a time.

Keith.

Fitted it yesterday and the fan is working again. There is still a slight wobble and squeek from it though so I know I will have to replace it too. Hopefully it will last me for my summer hols!
