Last year my insurance was £321.92 for TPF&T with absolutely no trimmings - just the bare minimum to make it legal.

This year I've just paid £185.50, minus the £70 Quidco cashback = £115.50. And that's for Comp with a £350 excess plus windscreen cover with a £75 excess.

Blimey. The new policy is with Aviva, bought via Quidco.

So exactly what were they doing with all those hundreds paid in previous years? Or are they now trading at a loss?

Pricing changes, daily in some cases. Nothing unusual there with what you've mentioned TBH.

It's true - I am older than I was a year ago. I may have crossed some age group band possibly.

I've had buildings + contents cover with Aviva for a couple of years and can't get another to quote anything close. It's just over £100 (for both). It was £50 for the first year, after £50 cashback. I must be bang in the middle of their target market or something.

So my top tip is Aviva, via Quidco (not their comparison thing, just directly from the list of suppliers).

On a related note, I was also having the annual shop around for breakdown cover. I found an offer for RAC for £34 - £20 cashback = £14. Great. But I then read the terms and all their standard policies exclude business use of any sort - even if driving your own car. The AA are the same. Both the AA and RAC want £100+ if you use your car for business travel.

I wonder how many people with breakdown cover are unaware that they are not covered if driving for business?

I'm going to try and add it as an extra to my insurance policy instead, as the policy already has business cover so it may be less. Aviva also happen to own RAC.

No they don't, Aviva sold them tail end of 2011 ;) :p

Aviva also seem to be very generous with additional discount when you've more than one policy with them which is why you'll probably be getting such good prices :)

Ah right, I stand corrected - they're still clearly very entrenched with them though.

I bought the car policy as a new customer, with no cross-selling from the home policy. It's just a good deal.

Either the rest of the industry's making vast profits, or I'll be looking for insurance again after they go bust.

System will have matched name and address for discount, luckily for you no cross selling needed.

Aviva won't be going bust any time soon, largest insurer in the country, and IMO the government wouldn't allow them to go bust over night, they'd have to invest like they did with certain banks, if Aviva go under the country will suddenly be in big trouble financially.
