Hi all I have a 56 plate croma i have had it 5 years, and it is a brilliant car, just lately tho, the gear lever jumps out of 5th gear, wont stat in at all, there is a cover which can be taken off ( behind one of the wheels,) inside there is a fork and a hub, the garage showed me the hub, it didn't click in position as it should, so it wont stay in gear, the garage ordered the part, they sent the wrong part, this happened 4 times, the part looked very similar, but a slightly different size. the garage then said sorry john you will have to take it to amain dealer, i have been to 3 this morning, even tho i told them which part they needed, oh we have to do a diagnostic test first only £177-00 plus vat per hr,
it only take an hr to dismantle and fit new part ( when i can get the right part ) anyone else had this problem

Hang on, if I remember right isn't the gearbox a GM Vectra box, or is that something I imagined in my slide into senility? You see owning a self shifter I don't pay too much attention to the threads about manual boxes.

Anyway, If it is you may be better off just getting a second hand or recon Vectra box. Because by the time you're forked out a load of money identifying the problem you could have it sorted.

Welcome JDN.

I have not had this problem, but where are you based?

Someone on here may be able to recommend a FIAT/Italian specialist in your area who won't be in the same "fleecing" mode as your Main Stealer.

I am based in Milton Keynes. The 5th gears were worn and was jumping out of gear, i managed to locate 2 gears ( they have 37 teeth, Instead of the normal 34 teeth ) the garage fitted the new gears, but it looks like they didnt fit the retaining clip properly and it all fell apart, cant getg any more, so I thought chamge the whole gearbox, not fiat ones around, but I think a opel vectra or saab 93 might fit ? but need to know for sure i am told there are so many variations its a mine field,

Hi,
If the garage didn't fit the parts properly they should fix it at their expense. What engine and gear box do you have? There are 3 diesel Cromas being broken on ebay right now. Alternatively use a gearbox specialist, there seem to be a couple around MK.
