That's hilarious. Italians have been better than most at rust prevention since the mid 90s. If you want rust. take a look at Mercedes, they are the "best" at that.

VW and Audi not far behind - front wings are their speciality.

You'll find the Italian and French stuff are amongst the best for corrosion.

That seems to be right. My Croma is starting to go the way the Stilo did.Rear wheel archs next to the bottom of the rear doors getting stone chipped,i think a poor design. But hopefully like the stilo even when down to bare metal it failed to rust.I will get this addressed to soon as we did with the stilo.

If you think your Croma's got no rust you're obviously not looking underneath (e.g. the bolts that hold on the exhaust heatshield). Or at the bolts that hold on the front bumper (inside the wheelarches and around the bonnet latch). Or at the rear wiper mechanism. Or the front wiper mechanism.

But I agree, the bodywork is pretty sound - it's only the bits that hold it together that dissolve. In fact I don't think many galvanised cars rust any more. That's why the scrapyards are full of decent looking cars that are completely knackered underneath.

Thanks doofer for pointers on where to look.
Whooa lanciaman, touchy aren't we. For your info, between my wife and I we've had an uno, lancia y10, tipo, mutipla and my son is on his second punto so we like fiats. A lot of cars have vunerable rust spots and I was enquiring did anyone have any knowledge of any on the croma. I was not insulting the entire Italian motor industry but if you fell I was, tough ****.!

Yeah, that's a bad design, mine is getting chipped also. I've seen that Renault has put some plastic foil in those spots on the Laguna. Fiat should have done the same on our Cromas.

Another equally excellent :D car I once had had the same design of protruding rear wheel arches - the Austin Montego. These usually turned to thick rust after about 3 years, then it spread all along the sills. The one we bought used had been brush-painted in black hammerite along the sills and up the rear wheelarches. It actually didn't look bad for a DIY slap-job - almost sporty!

I might be doing the same to the Croma in about another 5 years.

Actually thinking about it, we really can't criticise the Italians for making rust-buckets in the past. We were probably world champions.

You would be doing the Hammerite on an Alfa 159 after 4 years old. Seriously !
159's have some serious issues now, it's either rust, heavy corrosion, 6 speed gearboxes imploding, paint peeling off like damp wall paper and so on.
