Technical Power steering failure - currently broken down

Yes, i'm glad to help!

I',m a 3 Croma owner, Italian, all of the Croma i have changed this cable,
because the problem is the cable connector to the pump.

New cable is reinforced (see the red plastic, original not have, only slim plastic near pin connection on the pump), and solve immediately the power steering failure.

i Have buy here in Italy, but i think ship worldwide.

i can't post url's, haven't 5 posts, then

google search: Errebishop Cablaggio Elettroguida FIAT Croma, is 41€

Sorry for my bad english.

Thought I was doing too well with my Power steering. Didn't realise it was back in April I posted regards this, so got away with nearly 6 months of no steering problems. But its back with a vengeance. So I think I am going to go ahead and try and get a vectra cable or the one pistiriddi suggests.

Obviously the black lead is the ground, and in the photo pistririddi supplied, looks shorter than the red lead.

Does anyone know where the ground is attached and I assume the red live wire goes to either the fusebox or maybe a relay? I don't have a circuit diagram to check how the connections are made so it is a case of trying to work out in-situ.

Anyone know the best place to get the Vectra lead?

Hi,
You can download the Croma electronic service manual "eLearn" here https://www.fiatforum.com/downloads.php?do=download&downloadid=373
You have to downlod the sections and uncompress them into a .ISO file and then burn that to a CD-ROM I used 7zip to decompress them.

It has the schematics. I think the lead goes to the fuses on the battery connector. I'm in the USA on business at the moment and don't have my eLearn disk with me to check.

Just ordered a new cable from Italy. Couldn't find a Vectra one anywhere so taken the plunge and hope it arrives ok.

Think I will go down the same route as Brian and leave the original in place and cable tie the new onto the loom, I can't see a problem with this.

While I wait I will see if I can get to the bottom of the lack of power as per another thread. It just never ends.................:bang:

Hi Brian

It was a thread I started back in September headed 'Power Loss'.

Still waiting for my cable to arrive.

The steering went big time when my wife was using it. Amazingly she managed to drive it home through Birmingham.:worship:

When I looked at it the following morning the steering light was still on so I got a stick about a metre long and gently pressed down on the power socket to the steering pump. Hey presto it works. Also the steering feels pretty good and responsive. So it would appear that the plug must work itself loose with all the pot holes/speedbumps etc we have to put up with; however I can't help feeling that these plugs should lock themselves pretty tightly once they snap into position. Could be mine is already broken. Will check when I fit the new one.

I now carry the stick together with a torch in the boot.

Hopefully when I get the new lead and fit it, the problem should be resolved.

My new lead arrived from Italy (took 2 weeks). Got my local garage to fit it whilst they had it to sort out a power loss problem, and so far so good. Been driving around for a couple of days now and the steering feels ok.

I think it will take a while though before I stop driving around with the expectation that the power steering will suddenly cut off .

I will post on progress after a few weeks. Hopefully it has cured the problem.

Hi Daveof49,
I am glad the change of the lead has worked out for you, which gives me some optimism with regard to the problem I am facing with my Croma (2007).

My steering wheel has become stiff in a couple of occasions and each time it has turned back to normal after driving for a minute or two. Do you think, in my case, the problem could be the same?

Thats exactly how mine started. It would go really stiff and then suddenly come back. The cable seems to have worked and it hasn't reoccurred since it was fitted.

It is worth buying a cable before taking it to a garage as they will probably quote you anything from £700- £900 + to change the whole steering pump :(. The cable cost me 50 euros from Italy but you may get a Vectra one cheaper.

Hi Kam05
The power steering draws a huge amount of current and the connector is not very good.

One check is that if you unplug the connector there might be marks around the pin or socket.

The vectra cable I got second hand from a car breaker was far superior and even had a rubber cover built in to protect the connection.

The other cheap thing to check is your battery. As the pump draws so much current a few people have found that the power steering going hard at slow speeds and full lock is the first sign that their battery is on the way out.

Let us know how you get on or if you need any more advice.

Thanks for your response. So you think Vectra one might have been better than the original cable?

Thanks for the advice. Indeed, the current battery was bought by the previous owner like 6-7 years ago, but it still works fine as there are no problems when starting the car nor the battery light is on. Nonetheless, you think I should get it tested?

Worth getting the battery checked but it does sound like the steering issue is the connector. A used Vectra C one is better. Seems Vauxall knew a couple of things like this connector and the "tulip" CV joints that they didn't tell Fiat about.

Thanks, pals
Just to be sure, would you please tell me if this is the infamous cable? WhatsApp Image 2018-12-07 at 16.06.33.jpeg

No, that is the fuel filter.
The power steering pump is much lower down, behind the middle of the engine. The plug goes in vertically to the base ot the pump.

It's the cable with thick ~4-5mm diameter wire.

I am a little confused because I was thinking that we are discussing this cable. But, I see no such cable on the photo you attached.

Could you please update us if the problem is solved for you after replacing the cable?
Thanks
