Hi
I'm new to the world of Croma's having purchased a 1.9 16V Multijet Eleganza a few weeks ago.
Everything is going great apart from starting from cold where it is taking about 3 times to start - more so during the very cold weather we have had recently. And when it does the engine judders for a few seconds and sounds like it is going to die. It is only the initial start where it does this, the rest of the day it is fine.
It has a 3 month warranty from the garage I bought it from and I will be taking it back at the weekend, but obviously the engine would have warmed up by then and the issue wont be noticeable.
Anyone got any ideas?

It probably needs a new battery. Get the dealer to test it. It's not just a case of reading the voltage - it needs to be loaded to get a reading. If you go into any of the chain garages they usually offer a free battery test - it might be worth getting it tested elsewhere if your dealer won't help.

Cold weather makes the voltage drop - it's to do with the chemistry. If the battery's borderline good enough to start it then a cold morning makes the difference between go and no-go.

Thanks for that Doofer.
My wife has just texted me to say it stalled coming out of a junction this morning with a brief mesage flash "insufficient engine............."

I think Doofer is right - your cold start problem does sound like its the battery. See my recent reply to Cromatix but I had the exact same symptoms (the car sounded like it was shaking itself to pieces!). My battery was tested at the service early december and I was told it was fine. I replaced the glowplugs but that made little difference but a new battery completely solved it. Also, I had got a bit lazy and wasn't waiting for the glow plug light to go out before firing and now that I do this it fires up almost instantly with no juddering.

With regards to the stalling, this has happened to me about half a dozen times in the last few years, usually when slowing to approach a junction or roundabout. I get the same message (it only flashes up briefly but it goes on to say something about engine oil pressure). I think that's a symptom rather than a cause. Mine is an auto which is supposed to be near impossible to stall. Anyway I finally managed to track down the probable cause to DPF regeneration - at least the last 3 times its happened I know it was regenerating at the time. This a real problem with the auto as you can't drop the clutch and blip the throttle to prevent it and you have to come to a complete stop and put your foot on the brake before it will re-start. I'm not sure there is a cure - I just monitor my DPF very closely with multiecuscan and when I know it is due a regen I take it for a blast on the dual carriageway to clear it out completely then I know it will be another 500 miles or so before it needs another.

The only time it happened and I know it wasn't regenerating I had a sticking EGR valve - you'll see alot of posts on here about EGR problems.

Wow, that's a coincidence. There are only a few hundred of these in the UK and I bought one a couple of weeks ago too and have the same problem (and a few more).

I'll have to keep an eye on your thread, and I'll try and update the one I've got going (search "croma misfire") if I get it fixed first. I've got that uncomfortable feeling in my wallet that Stuart543 and Doofer are right though...

Thanks guys

I had a mechanic friend look at it yesterday prior to returning to dealer. He said there was fluid leaking around the glow plugs?
