Question Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

I bought my 1.9 16v used with 152.000km from a local dealer which I asked then if the car is fitted with DPF and they said no. After 5000 km I went with the car for a regular diagnosis, just to check if there is a problem and I find out that the car is fitted with DPF . In the manual the recommended oil is Selenia WR 5w40 that pass FIAT 9.55535-M2 specifications. Now the Selenia WR 5W40 I used is FIAT 9.55535-N2 and I guess/hope N2 is better/newer than M2. The dilemma is this ...I saw Selenia WR 5W30 with FIAT 9.55535-S1 and I do not know if this is better than the one I already have in the engine. In FiatEecuSscan the DPF average distance last 5 regenerations is 1205km.

FIAT 9.55535-M2 Qualification for lubricants with extended drain
FIAT 9.55535-N2 Qualification for lubricants with a very good characteristics for turbocharged engines, Diesel and gasoline, with extended drain.
FIAT 9.55535-S1 Qualification for Diesel and gasoline engine, with exhaust treatment system, lubricants, granting fuel economy and extended drain.

On my previous owned cars I used only Liqui Moly engine oils and two weeks ago I sent a e-mail to Liqui Moly regarding the type of oil I should use from them in my 1.9 16v. That happened before I found out that my car is fitted with DPF. I`m posting the answer if anyone is interested:

"Many thanks for your inquiry dated 05.09.2012 and the interest in our
products.

We have checked your inquiry and we can recommend the following products

with particular filter Top Tec 4100 5 W-40 Art.-Nr. 3701- 5 liter

without particular filter Leichtlauf High Tech 5 W-40 Art.-Nr.3864 - 5 liter

We can also recommend you an oil additiv with MoSē our

Oil Additiv Art.-Nr. 1011 - 125ml"

I want to use the oil which is best to ensure a long and happy life for my engine.
Did anyone tried the Selenia WR Pure Energy 5W30 ?

Re: Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

I currently use

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 Engine Oil (Croma)
------------------------------------------
Fully synthetic oil
Fuel Diesel

SAE 5W-40
VW 502.00/505.00/505.01
MB 229.31/229.51
BMW Longlife 04
Renault 0700/0710
Meets Ford WSS-M2C917-A
ACEA A3/B3/B4/C3
API SM/CF

The above spec. was in 2011. I believe they changed / increased the specs since then.

I have a spreasheet with a number of oils I gathered specs on. I chose Castrol Trubo Edge diesel becuase it met the required specs, is a good quality make and readily available.

These are quite I few suitable oils out there.

Re: Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

You're actually worried about what brand to put in?!

I'm currently using Asda oil, was previously using Wilkinson (I'm not joking). All of the correct grade as specified in the manual, meets all sorts of requirements.

The car's been running beautifully with it for 3 years/40k miles, couldn't be better. You could probably buy genuine snake oil for the same price as the Liqui Moly Hyper Sooper Dooper Plus.

Yes, I'm a cynic.

The engine oil has to be low ash oil and this is indicated by a C in the spec.
C1 C2 etc

Re: Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

What confuses me is that when you look at a top quality (say Mobil or Castrol) oil then it can get very confusing because there is often a huge overlap in specifications between Petrol & Diesel Oils of the same brand. This makes it difficult for all of us but in my experience you must check the specs & details, match them to what your vehicle manufacturer specifies and buy what you are comfortable with and the "Diesel" or "Petrol" tag is a final decider. What I'm saying is the many petrol engine oils in 2012 meet or exceed the diesel oil specifications of say 2010.

Of course top notch, top spec, latest oils of 2012 are (or should be) better than oils of 2010 but there may be a high price premium to pay in running at the bleeding edge of oils when a little prudent research will deliver an oil that is more than adequate and meets all warranty etc. terms of the manufacturer.

I was surprised to find that my (diesel) Marea 130 JTD used the same oil filter as my (petrol) 20V Turbo Coupe! Furthermore, from the block down, the two engines are practically identical.

Thanks. The Wilkinson at least isn't rated as low ash, so I guess that's not recommended. It seems to work though - I'll have to follow Dave's lead and backwash it with the jetwash if it ever gets blocked.

I just find it hard to imagine that the (say) one litre of oil that gets burnt every year is in any way significant compared to the thousands of litres of diesel. Presumably diesel isn't zero ash, especially as the fuel companies add detergents and other additives.

No, I`m worried about the grade. All I want to know if Selenia WR 5W30 is better than Selenia WR 5W40 to use in a JTD engine with DPF. The brand for me is either Selenia or Liqui Moly. Selenia because is the original oil recommended by Fiat and Liquy Moly because is very good and only manufactured in Germany, not like other brands which have factories all over the world and can be easy counterfeit. I don't know what is the situation in your countries, but in Romania you'll never find genuine Mobil, Castrol or other top brands. It's a big market, the profit is huge, and that's why it gets counterfeit. Same it's with the olive oil in Italy for example, the business is bigger and more profit is made from this than with the drugs, because it is easier to move tons of olive oil. In conclusion, I want and I use only trusted brands from which I can be 100% sure that the product is genuine.

Here 5 liters of Liqui Moly is more cheaper than Selenia WR with almost 50%.

Re: Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

I'll stick to Selenia WR 5W40 for now. I saw that in the user manual of the mkII is specified also Selenia WR Pure Energy 5W30, but taking in consideration that during the summer we have here 40 degrees and in the winter -25, 5W40 remains a better choice.

I use 5w40 Valvoline, with the correct low ash rating, but will be able to save a few pennies at my next service because I no longer have a DPF to worry about! Win win all the way

Re: Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

VW/Audi Platinum, 5w40 fully synthetic designed to cope with massive cam loading in PD engines - this oil will deal with just about anything! It's not DPF suitable but like Halison my DPF is soon going to be long gone. Change every 10k/1 year.
