Technical Engine Oil Dilemma - What type of oil do you use ?

I bought some more halfords oil in the summer so I'm ok for a couple of years too. I barely do 10k a year so it gets changed well before the recommended mileage. It still has to be made to the same spec regardless of the price. Selenia is one of the best oils out there but £10 against £50 odd quid is a no brainer to me.

Well this is a refreshing thread .....

with quite correct statements like "As long as it equals or exceeds all the specs of the recommended oil it won't do any harm."

If you dig around you'll find a number of posts by me re oil & fuels where I defend the Standards perspective.

I'm on Halfords and Castrol oils at the moment depending on the car.

One big advantage of Halfords oils is that they come in 5Ltr tubs so you get a full oil change and top-up ability from the one tub.

We ought to boycott 4L tubs. For as long as I can remember oil came in 5L tubs. Then some smart marketing cookie decided to downsize to 4L, not fully prorata the 4/5 price and force us into buying two more expensive per litre 4L tubs to do a 4.5L oil change.

My thinking was that having 3 x 4L tubs meant that I have enough for 2 changes and some top ups if needed. And it was still only £30 for the three.

But yes, 4L isn't a great size really.

Support the Southampton one!!!!!

Get your letters off to your MPs everyone and a copy to Castrol and all the other oil diggers!!!

A nice sting if you’re not aware of it.
It’s a case of oil at the front-retail shiny-badge end with the <5L trickery – when it maybe re-badged in 5L packs further back in the supply chain. For example – Fuchs & Castrol seem to be available in 5L when re-badged as Unipart & Platinum.

The Alfa (GM/FIAT) 1.9 engine can’t be far off 20yo. If you check-out the great envelope of badges it’s operated under over that time - there’s also a not small envelope of different oils that each badge is supposed to be run on.

I’d be interested to learn if FIAT Tychy, that build the Ford Ka, insist that they use Selenia.(?)

If you buy the 4 litre packs when they're a tenner then it's much more economical as Brian says. Which is what I've done. But if you can't find any deals then they are a huge con as the extra 1 litre required can cost upto a tenner on its own!

i couldn't find a local supplier for Ravenol. buying it would have included a postage charge, that made it more than oem oil.

You mean, more expensive than Selenia ? Isn't the transport free of charge from the online supplier ? I don't know, that's why I am asking :) If I order it online, the transport is free of charge so I have to pay only 32 euro/26 punds for 5 liters.

Hi again everyone.

At the risk of restarting a zombie thread I thought I'd post the following link to ecp's oil sale this weekend.

They've got the following oil from Petronas for 50% off using code oil50 this weekend.

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/F...ngineoils/5w30-engine-oil/?521772461&&cc5_247

Does anyone know if it's any good / compatible with the 1.9 mj engines we have?

£12.74 for 4 litres (not enough I know) seems very good and it seems to be the correct spec
