Getting back to forced regens, the Fiat dealer I spoke to said they've melted rear bumpers in the past from forcing it. It's not a maintenance thing, but for emergencies only. His advice to me was to "drive it like I'd stolen it".
 
There have been several discussions about discrepancies between mileages recorded in say engine ECU and Odometer.

There have also been attempted explanations.

When I said "it is not unknown" I wasn't implying it was a fault or bug in Yani's software but just an unexplained discrepancy between different control units.

Seriously though the heat generated is just massive. I remember on one day I could tell the car had entered regen coming down the motorway to go for the weekly shop. Car was still 'chugging' on entering Sainsburys car park which was very busy. Normally if I detect a regen before I want to stop I just drive round the block for a while till it is complete. On this occassion with a parking space found I just sat in the car and kept the revs just over 2k rpm till regen was complete.

Open car door, heatwave, hot smell etc. Real funny part was looking at the tarmac bby the exhaust outlet. Totally fried it was. Kind on felt guilty but decided this was Fiats problem and not mine.

NOWHERE in the manual does it tell you not to park anywhere during a regeneration cycle! Nearest they get is the standard clause about not parking over long grass.
 
My regen uses about a pint of diesel extra, in about 5 minutes on the road, I try to keep the revs up 2500 to 3000, where possible during regen.
Reminds me of the later RO80 which had an air pump into the exhaust to burn off the excess unburnt fuel, and could melt the carpet in traffic.
 
I was going to post on here how you know when a regen was taking place. I've just come back from town and when the wife opened her door I could smell the same smell that occurred when I did a forced regen 2weeks ago. I decided to go for a bit of a blast for 10 mins instead of putting the car in the garage. Mpg was way down on instant consumption as expected so after 10 mins got back home and put the car away. Just plugged the elm in and launched ecuscan to see what's going on. Last mileage regen status was 0 so that could mean that the cycle never completed fully. Blockage status was 74.4% so that is down from 86% after the forced regen. Original status before I bought the software was 104% so it's a great improvement. Oil degradation has now dropped to 91% since reset 2 weeks ago. I really like being able to see what's going on. Best £60 I've spent for a while.
 
I've had my Croma (1.9 16v) for years and I've never been able to tell when it's doing a regen. Whenever I've looked via the software it's all well though. Sometimes I've thought it sounded a bit odd, but when I looked at mpg without the right foot on the loud pedal it was 99.9, i.e. not using any fuel. According to someone on here it should be lower if it's doing a regen.

The only time I thought it was doing it when parking was when the exhaust flexi was knackered and the fumes were coming out of the front wheel arch.

Perhaps it's more noticeable with the bigger engine, but I'd like to know if anyone else can sense it working on a 1.9.

No, it'll still eventually show 99.9, but instead of jumping right to 99.9 insstantly when you take your foot off the go pedal it'll take about 5 seconds, it'll go up in like 12's ie, 54.6 - 68.5 - 80.2 - 96.9 and then 99.9.
