General Another 2.4 breaks cover.....

Looks like a very nice car. I'd be a bit wary of buying a car with a tow bar, but could forgive that given that it looks to be in very good overall condition.

It's identical to mine inside, but mine has the sensible engine (1.9 16v) :D

I bought it, now I'm in the club. It's very clean, barely a scratch on it. Most things work. I think the engine could do with the injectors looking at, it's a touch rough on idle and cold start though smooths and pulls well as the rpm climbs. Supremely smooth and no smoke/rattles, my fiat diag gear will arrive in the week (I'm a vw/audi tech so do not have any) and I will take a look at it in more depth then. Few comments are - why when you turn it off and get out does the boot stay locked after the auto-locking locked it? Is there an option (perhaps in diag) to do an auto-unlock like on my VAG cars when the key is turned off?

I'll be doing a cambelt and a good service on it. Also I'll be after some 17in wheels and a light colour leather interior (I may have to buy another croma and swap the interiors, the odd petrol prestigio pops up cheap) so if anyone knows of anything let me know please. Is it worth holding for the electric leather? Do they have heated seats then? Also wouldn't mind Xenon lights, my Octavia has heated leather and Xenon's and those things I immediately miss when driving the Croma. Oh and a decent boot, it's about half the size of my Octavia :-( On the plus side, I did not expect the ride or the gearbox to be as good, a real gem beating the big Audi's I drive every day. Greg.

Hi Greg, good man! Welcome aboard and congratulations on owning a pretty exclusive car (only 31 still going of an original total of 35 2.4s sold in the UK!)

I've only had my 2.4 for a month, so I'll do my best based on my limited experience and what I have read posted by the good Forumers on here.

Tailgate lock - the car is either not programmed to lock/unlock all, or the micro-switch on the tailgate handle is knackered. Mine works on and off. Replacement is all in one with the handle, for which I got a brand new one off of eBay for £30 but it will need painting.

Good luck with the leccy seats - they seem to be as rare as the xenons - HIDs are now your only option, which no doubt will cause a few groans on here. Will be looking at this myself soon.

Leather is very nice if you can find a set - mine is grey. The alternative was beige, but not sure if that would look out of place if your dash is the 2 tone grey.

Cam belt will need you to undo engine mounts etc and wiggle engine to get lower cover bolts out. Several posts on here so have a search.

I've got no complaints with the ride on the 18s, but to be fair I have not driven one with 17s to compare.

Get some piccies up....

Had mine 4 years, never risked opening the roof, not trying it now.
Not used the sat-nav or multi CD player either, but occasionally use the leather seats.

My sunroof wouldn't close on the test drive. A quick squirt of WD40 did the trick. I now use silicone spray every couple of months and it opens and closes perfectly - even at 70 mph!! :D
I don't see the point in having such a good feature and not using it!

I will test the roof in the workshop on a day when I don't have to drive.... ;-) Boot seems to work fine now, boot lights were unplugged, now work fine, roof blind had missing fuse, now works fine.... Pictures will come ;-)

I've just been messing with my sunroof as it developed an annoying rattle. Here's what I've learned...

There are some runners you can see when it's open, so they're easy to clean and lubricate. But there is also another runner behind it, which is concealed by the plastic trim down the edges of the roof. I removed the roof rails, then used a plastic bike tyre lever to gently prise the plastic trim off. It's just held on by friction clips. This is for a car with roof rails - it may have other fixings without the rails, as the roof rails do clamp it down.

After getting the trim off, the runner is visible. Give it a good clean and a healthy squirt of white grease. The same for the front runner. Then remove each of the two torx screws that hold the sunroof up when it tilts (one at a time!). This is where my rattle was. Clean both halves of the bracket, douse in white grease and screw back together.

To replace the trim, remove all the little clips left behind in the car roof and clip them onto the tabs on the trim. There are silver and black ones, for each of the two sized tabs - I can't remember which is which, but it should be clear. Mine was full of grit and filth, so I used the Hoover nozzle and a paintbrush to clear it all out, and for the runners and other areas too.

I also removed the double-sided velcro pads that had been used by PERRYS of PORTSMOUTH to attach the trim after they obviously couldn't work out how to get the clips out of the holes and back onto the tabs. They had also bent some of the clips by leaving them in the holes and stuffing the trim back on, presumably using a hammer. I will never ever trust that cowboy main Fiat dealer for any work on any car I own.

After doing this, mine's working great. It almost worked before, but not very well. Mine had a new mechanism fitted by Perrys of Portsmouth under warranty about 3 years ago, but it made little difference. If indeed they did replace it - I now have no faith in their work. Grease is the answer.

I also found a liberal smothering of trim polish helps the sunroof slide past the rubber seal as the brackets pop up past it before sliding back.

If you get stuck then there's a manual winder within the rear interior light. The handle for it will either be clipped inside the light or in the glovebox.
