Hi,
My 8v 1.9JTD's EGR was starting to go again (down a bit on power, not so much torque, stuttering around 2k rpm) so I thought I'd give it a bit of a clean today to see if it helped.

I took it out and gave it a good spray with carb cleaner (£6.99 from Halfords) and thought I'd try and make one of the swirl gaskets (3 x 6.5mm holes in the middle of a tuna tin lid).

Having just driven it over 100 miles of mixed town, country and motorway driving the car's been transformed. I hadn't realised just how bad it was getting.

Definitely worth the effort and I'd recommend it to anyone having the same trouble.

very bad idea to use tuna lid for it imho
you need acid and heat resistant steel otherwise you'll find your super gasket smashing your valves and pistons after it disintegrates
i'm suprised you want to save 8 pounds with such silly idea, but hey it's not my car, not my engine
to others: don't do it like that, just buy a proper swirl gasket from fiat!

Hi Arti,
Making my own wasn't my first choice but the main dealer didn't know what I was talking about, or at least claimed not to anyway. Mind you we're not exactly on the best of terms, not least following their "£1000 for a track rod arm because you need to buy a whole steering rack" nonsense last October.

I was pretty sceptical in the first place anyway as I couldn't see how it could make that much difference.

Having tried it though I'm converted and it would definitely be money well spent to get the right thing.

I've seen some on ebay but am always a bit nervous. Probably still a better idea than mine though.

Would you know the part number for the 8v JTD version, or at least the details for a decent online retailer?

Whenever I blank it off I get the check engine insufficient reflow error.

I got a proper swirl gasket from Tafmet off ebay and got it fitted a couple of days ago.

Engine runs fine again, thank goodness. Best £3.49 I've spent in a while.

I called the local arnold clark dealership who quoted £19.20 for one but I had to order a minimum of 10 - thank goodness for the internet, eh?

Fiat list two EGR swirl gaskets. The expensive one is 71751468 and is just a flat holed plate which still requires the crushable gaskets. The other is 55225287 like 71751468 but with silicone rubber seal & MUCH cheaper.

I fitted the 71751468 with a standard gasket either side. Total cost was a shade over £6 and worth every penny.

It's like a different car but I am going to plug the laptop in to see how it's changed the settings. It feels as if it's idling slightly faster - previously it idled at 909 revs so it'll be interesting to see if it's changed.
