Sorry for another post but im ready and waiting for the right Croma to come along and ill buy it. It'll be getting used a taxi but after the problems ive had with my Pug 407 1.6HDi and its DPF and DMF im thinking of staying clear of the diesels and buying a petrol as a lot of other taxi drivers are now doing the same. Anyway i want a bit of power, reasonable economy and it needs to pull my Adria caravan so im thinking the 1.8 16V. So what problems does this variant suffer with as all i can find is info on the diesels?

I believe there are about 50-odd petrol Cromas in the UK, so good luck finding one.

I'm surprised taxi drivers are using petrol, even with the odd issue on diesels these days.

I'm not sure Petrol choice over Diesel these days for a taxi is odd at all.

Taxis get lots of start and stop cycles. Not good for DPFs. These cycles mean increased clutch wear. There is no such thing as a quick and cheap modern diesel clutch change. Damn DMF being to blame.

Modern diesel cars are no longer anywhere near as fuel efficient as the old ones (pre Euro4, DPF and Euro5 regs). Diesel in the UK is so much more expensive than petrol and modern petrol engines are far more economical than older ones. Diesel cars also cost more to buy.

About the only thing a diesel engine has going for it (other than torgue for hauling/towing loads) is increased life over a petrol engine. Average lifetime RPM for a petrol is probably 3000 to 3750 rpm. For a diesel 1750 to 2250. So a factor of about 1.6 approx.

So a 100k miles on a petrol is equivalent to 160k on a diesel.

I'm no longer convinced, all things taken into consideration that diesel is a viable fuel option in the UK with the current tax burden. In Europe it is a different matter where diesel is much cheaper than petrol.

I can't see the UK government changing this although/depsite the haulage industry have been crying out for a reversal.

Think about buying a 2.2 petrol and getting it LPG'ed with a Prins conversion, at 68p p/litre LPG this is what many taxi's are running on here. 2.2 is a good GM engine, tow's well in the Vectra. I had my Jeep converted and it makes good sence, especially if you do a lot of miles
