Thought I’d escaped any problems this year.

But …

“Code read for check engine lamp, Cam sensor faulty also code for cooling fan 3 control failure, suspect fan multifunction relay.
Error codes
P0340 – Phase sensor (Cam position sensor)
P0482 – Cooling fan number 3 circuit
P0683 – Glowplug control no communication”

Any experience of these problems, men?

Thanks for your input s130

The Check engine signal showed from cold on an outbound trip of about 15ml last week – with evident loss of power. But on the inbound 15ml leg about 2hrs later, performance seemed back-to-normal. MoT was Tue29 - & error codes & comments at #1 above from my indie. Can’t recall now what reader kit they use - but they’ve suggested a visit to a “specialist” diagnostic outfit.

No start-up problems – but very limp in 1 & 2. Mpg drop to 35 av (from normal 40+) – but then only doing short local runs, no confidence to go further.

Had a Google & come-up with the following …

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit
What does this mean? BD Code P0340 refers to
This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
Symptoms Possible symptoms of OBD code P0340
Symptoms can include: Hard starting or no start Rough running/misfiring Loss of engine power
Causes Possible causes of OBD code P0340
A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened: a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken the camshaft position sensor may have failed the PCM may have failed there exists an open circuit the crankshaft position sensor may have failed
Possible Solutions With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try: Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit Check for continuity in the circuit wiring Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor Replace the camshaft position sensor as required Check the crankshaft position circuit as well Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

P0482 Fan 3 Control Circuit
What does this mean? OBD Code P0482 refers to
The electric cooling fan is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM) through the cooling fan relay based on inputs from the following components: - The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor - The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor - The A/C selector switch - The A/C refrigerant pressure sensor - The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) The PCM controls the cooling fan by grounding the cooling fan control circuit which turns ON the cooling fan relay. The cooling fan relay will be commanded ON when the following conditions are met: - The engine coolant temperature reaches 106°C (223°F) or more. - The A/C clutch requested. - The vehicle speed is less than 38 MPH. The cooling fan relay will be commanded ON regardless of vehicle speed when the following conditions are met: - The engine coolant temperature is 151°C (304°F) or more. - The A/C refrigerant pressure is high. The cooling fan may be commanded ON when the engine is not running under a fan run-on conditions described in the electric cooling fan general description portion of the service manual.
Symptoms Possible symptoms of OBD code P0482 - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) - Engine overheating
Causes Possible causes of OBD code P0482
- Fan control relay harness - Fan control relay connector - Fan control relay - Cooling Fan 3 The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: The P0483 code is detected when the PCM detects that the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match.
Possible Solutions - Replace the malfunctioning fan control relay 3 - Replaced cooling fan 3

P0683 Glow Plug Control Module to PCM Comm Circuit
What does this mean? OBD Code P0683 refers to
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a communication fault with the Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) circuit
Symptoms Possible symptoms of OBD code P0683
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) - Lack/Loss of Power - The engine may be harder to start - Engine hesitation
Causes Possible causes of OBD code P0683
- Control line open circuit - Control line short to ground or power - Faulty GPCM - ECM fault
Possible Solutions

Croma visited specialist 10:00–10:45 today. Only a short drive away & no sign of limp mode or problem from cold. Diagnosis …

"Cooling fan No 3 & glow plug circuit faults recorded."
(Cam position sensor doesn’t show)

Engine left running & temp needle hardly moved as yet. Test drive & limp mode apparent – embarrassing hill-climb. Return at almost walking pace – until hill descent assist. Conclude limp kicks-in somewhere as temp rises.
Cooling fan control module examined – water damaged.

Any idea re P/No? Make? Alfa/Fiat/GM alternatives?

Look your car up on ePER on this site. You will need chassis number because I suspect the module may change bewteen Croma models.

Once you have the P/N: you can go from there.

If you get stuck the PM me your chassis number and I'll look it up for you as I have a much later version of ePER myself.

Where is the cooling fan control module, how did it get water damaged (so we can stop the same thing happening to other vehicles)?

Sits on-top & between the fans, DIDI. Just inboard of grill so somewhat open to weather – maybe a shrink-wrap material would help ... or cause another problem.

104 Cooling System
SubCategory: 10409/01 Fan & Fan Drive
Control Unit: 71740474/5&6

Just checking in few mins.

Thanks for being there s130 – 71740475 looks favourite.

VIN not recognised. FF ePer predates my Croma – came off the line after that issue.
(Tried it yesterday - but obviously not looked in right place)

That issue indicates - 71740474 (M88): 8v120, 71740475 (M92): 16v150, 71740476 (007): ?

Any mods on your version?

Having the same P0482 problem with my Croma. Did replacing "71740475" fix your problem?

Yes - the 475 was the only part replaced & fixed the problem.
Check the Valeo P/No - for more search results.
But note s130 comments that a 476 unit is req'd for auto.

Ok, thank you. It's just that 476 can not be found from ebay which is kind of weird.

Now this is getting stupid. "71740475" is fitted in some AUTOMATIC vectras and Saab 9-3. Why does automatic chroma need the one ending with 6 if other automatics have the one ending with 5

I am trying to trace the 71740476 radiator fan relay block, apparently Croma 2.4 only, no other Fiats. I have ordered it today from Fiat dealer, don't know about delivery yet, about £115
I suspect the 1.9 uses 71740475, but will check ePer later.

Hi Was it the cooling fan control unit ? my mechanic tells me the part no is PA6GF30 1379151 is this your part, if so where did you get one from
( mine got water in it, ) john

See #10
I believe it was supplied by shop4parts on `next-day’ del’y
Note: this was correct for my 55 1.9/16v150 Prestigio (twin-fan) - auto & other models may differ

My fan control relay unit was full of water and had corroded one small pin so that it had vanished. this set the fan going and flattened the battery. It took 2 weeks from the Fiat dealer to come from Italy. £150 and although a Valeo part it does not exist on their web site.
Mine is the 2.4. I had no error codes.

Hi Again sorry to be a pain, do you have the part number for the control unit, the i have and given them is the plastic number not a part number. Mick from Shop4parts also sugested that if you didn't have the number, they could search your name in their database
and find the part that way, if you wouldnt mind doing that

best regards

John
