AFAIK the block is the same regardless of whether it's in a GM or Fiat and only really the ancillaries differ. IIRC the majority of the JTD's R&D was conducted by Fiat.
Edit: I don't take wikipedia as being gospel but [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JTD_engine"]JTD engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/Filehoto_062708_008.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/61/Photo_062708_008.jpg/120px-Photo_062708_008.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/6/61/Photo_062708_008.jpg/120px-Photo_062708_008.jpg[/ame]
The only GM engine on the Croma is the 2.2 petrol engine. The 1.9 and 2.4 diesels are Fiat units. GM and Saab use the Fiat units in Vectra C, Signum, Astra, Zafira and Saab 93.
Technically they're the GM versions of the Fiat JTD engine- its the same engine but with subtle differences like the paper element oil filter cartridge on the rear of the block, as opposed to the identical but Fiat-spec version in the Bravo which has a more traditional spin-on filter mounted at the front.
In the last few years, Fiat-built engines for Fiats have the Fiat PowerTrains (FPT) logo embossed in the rocker cover.
