anyone got any ideas / thoughts on whether to go for a re-map of the ecu, or to go for the chip tuning type box ?
i've heard ecu re-map will cost 300 notes, where as chip tuning box only 80 notes.
does anyone know the pros and cons?
p.s. new clutch just cost £264 in labour alone!!

You forgot the third option - neither.

Personally I think cars were over-engineered in the past, and chipping was a good way of safely getting a bit more out of them. I don't think that's the case any more.

There are a few cars worth chipping. The earlier BMW Mini came with three power ratings (at different prices), but they were in fact just the same engine with different maps (the two slower ones were intentionally crippled). It was therefore very sensible to buy the least powerful and swap its map for the most powerful.

I get the feeling that the Croma engines are already operating at or near their limit, e.g. the 150BHP 16v version has a fair bit of power for a mere 1.9 diesel.

Basically, Fiat has already chipped it for you!

correct me if i'm wrong but i think that fiat itself squeezed 183bhp from this 16V 1.9 diesel by mounting 2 turbos in new lancia delta, the engine internals are the same just bi-turbo, don't know about the g-box tho.

I didn't know that, but I doubt they'd use a GM box in a Lancia. It's probably designed to last as long as its warranty (2 years from new in the EU?).

Actually, SAABs still use this engine with 2 turbos. I don't know what else they add and what gearbox they use though.

well still shellshocked, and i dont think i'll be chipping or re mapping anytime soon, coz including labour car needed clutch unit , new flywheel , and master cylinder... £1050. skint now!! only done 33,000 miles

 think of the damage that driving style would do with a re=map / tuning box! (unless you only just bought it of course...)
