I cannot find a gearbox anywhere for my FIAT Croma 1.9 diesel.

If anyone can direct me to a place where I could get one before I have to go to actual suppliers I'd be very grateful

I'm pretty sure it's a Vauxhall/GM gearbox, and the good news is that it's very common. You should be able to get one from a Vectra that's been broken for parts.

It just needs someone with more knowledge than me to confirm, then lots of treble-checking of part numbers to make sure it's the same.

Fiat will only refer to their own part numbers, but if you have a look at the thing itself you may well find a GM part number moulded into it. If so then that's what you need to get one at a more sensible price.

Long ago I had several gearboxes rebuilt by transmission specialists, might be worth a try.
ePer shows the Croma as the only Fiat using this box, which suggests it would be useful to investigate the GM boxes.

Have just re-asked this question in the other trail (what parts are really GM on the croma). Can S130 confirm the gearbox is a GM unit and is it the 1.9 vectra one or is that just a guess. I would currently guess the same but am after some solid opinion/experience as my box has literally just rattled itself to bits at 99k miles.

Is there anyone who has replaced the box with a GM one?

Thanks

It could be worth asking your local transmission specialist rebuilder. Get a price for a rebuild, and suggestions on a replacement, they should have the info.

I know it is a GM box. No doubt about that.

Where one could find differences is in gear and final drive ratios. For the Croma box I can lookup eLearn / Owners handbook as to what these are (should be in the back of your owners handbook) but one would need to do a similar thing for the GM and Saab gearboxes to find an exact match. Fiat could have changed some ratios.

Ok I've had a look on eper. According to the parts catalogue the manual box is common for the petrol 2.2, and the diesel 8v and 16v (but unique to the Croma as far as the FIAT/ALFA family is concerned). The only thing that seems to change is the final drive. (Now this surprises me because I always thought the 8v diesel was a five speed box and the 16v a six speed). All the auto boxes are different.

The transmission part number is 55195692 (recon part number 71786720). The final drive for both 8v and 16v diesels is the same.

Anyway, that aside these guys reckon they have a box for a diesel croma

Ok I'm back with a revision: Have just been on e-learn and it looks like that the box for the 8v and 16v diesel is the same unit. So the 8v is a six speeder too - you live and learn.

The spec published by Italiaspeed agrees manual 6 speed same ratios and final drive for 8v and 16v D. They are not infallible though. As I said, it seemed likely a GM box as it's not used on any other Fiat.

We got ours repaired by a transmission specialist after it did a similar thing and pretty much collapsed.

The issue seems to be its a 3 shaft special, so beyond the normal capability of a garage for stripping down and rebuilding with new bearings and seals.

I believe it's Japanese Aisin, Italiaspeed.com might have the spec in the details of the 2005 Croma. The 2.4 has a slightly larger box.

Vectra C and Signum should be relatively easy to find in UK, Saab 9.3 and Cadillac BLS a bit harder but should fit as well.

He's right you know - or have it rebuilt by a specialist (about a grand max). A whole new box from FIAT is about £1500 plus fitting (so factor in £2K)

A Croma with a knackered auto is not worth £4k. Use the above as a bargaining chip or walk away. You'll find the car you want soon.
