Ok, So yesterday afternoon I picked my car up after having three new springs fitted, both front and one rear. I drove the car home and it seemed ok. On the ride to work this AM the Battery light came on. I go into work and read on here a little and found the news of the cost of an alternator repair. After work I go out to the car and it starts fine, but I notice a 1100RPM idle. Then about a mile from home (10-12 minutes of driving from work) everything starts dieing. Power steering goes out etc, etc, etc. I make it home and turn the engine off. I try to restart and the battery is totally flat. Pretty sure the alternator is dead.

So the question is...did the shop somehow cause this or is it that much of a coincident that it went bad basically immediately following the repair. I would suspect they were near it when replacing one of the front springs.

CHECK THE CLAMPS ON THE BATTERY. AND THE EARTH LEAD, engine to body, the lead block into the alternator, live cable to the solenoid, fan belt?. they may have dislodged some cable, or (don`t trust them more than a inch (25mm) dept!) swapped the alternator?.....how much have been quoted for a recon alternator?

I have not been quoted anything yet. I got home about 3:30. I called the MOT shop that swapped out the springs and got the answering machine. I waited for them to call back and did not try anywhere else yet. I will in the AM.

As for the dont true them thing. This shop has a very good reputation what alot of people I know, all are happy with anything they have had done.

... Pretty sure the alternator is dead ...

Just to advise my alternator packed-in at 46.7K mls. If/when you get round to replacement - best to check with your fitters that they're aware there's a short route. I didn't & it cost me the extra time involved.

Do a search - you'll find `previous' on it.

Caravadossi...Are you referring to removing the alternator from the top vs. the bottom?

New Alternator will be here tomorrow. It will be installed on Tuesday. The mechanic thinks he can get it done in 2 hours. I hope!

That's the one. Clearing a house for a relative taken into care, took my eye-off-the-ball on that one - & I didn't take enough care on what was going-on. My independent has some FIAT history - but they've never worked on a Croma before mine from Nov 2009.

My alternator packed up the day after the EGR valve was changed but I did it myself so I know I did not do anything to damage it. My mileage was around 46k. I got my new alternator from alternatormart.co.uk and was very pleased with the sevice, I have an 8v Dynamic and had to take it out from the top after a bit of a struggle.

Please please post details about part numbers and how to fix it. Mine's just packed in at 60k miles. It's currently sitting dead on the drive, so all help would be very much appreciated. I've no problem with electronics, soldering etc.

I don't know the part numbers but the alternator is in fact repairable no need to buy the whole unit because some diodes or the regulating bridge have gone. Open up yours usually you can spot the damage and go from there

Had a look at mine. The diodes are pressed in. I can't see how they could be replaced. I've ordered a new one now anyway.
