Technical Croma gearbox - shared cars?

of course, if you bought one with an auto box.............

Cheers, just jinx it, why don't you?

Got me wondering if I should buy the following just in case.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/98-SAAB-9-5-Turbo-automatic-Gearbox-AISIN-Breaking-/280470847335?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item414d5d7f67

Although the big hammer on the floor makes me a bit suspect.

If you are going to fork out £2,000 plus. Why not just buy another Croma and strip it for spares?

I have just found out something really scary. Until 1969 FIAT used to make aircraft and helicopters.

I don't see much point in spending money to buy another Croma - I'm unlikely to need many spares and it will cost me more than the money I'm spending on a brand new clutch/flywheel and a gearbag recon.

Of course when I say I, I mean we. :)

a rebuilt by hand of some one who is good at it is going to be way better than another used box, probably be even better than a new factory one as they will have put it back together checking all the end floats and stuff are spot on

That certainly is my hope. The guy they are getting to look at the box has years of experience and is well spoken of in most of the garages I know.

I.

Of course when you say we, you mean the missus. Or if you are the missus, then you did mean you.:)

That's the problem with these forums, how can you be borderline sexist if you don't know who you are talking to?

Of course that's if I am being - I have no problem in admitting that in our house I am the hunter gatherer and my partner is the financial director.

When cruising in 6th gear is it normal to feel the stick shift buckle back and forth upon applying and releasing the gas pedal. There is a sufficient moving of the gear shift corresponding to the pedal pressure and I wonder if this is by design or abnormal?

I don't think I am in a position to comment on what is, and what is not normal in the gearbox! What I do know is that coming off the gas when using cruise control was quite harsh, and probably because our DMF has around 90 degrees of movement :(

Also our gear shifter cables were very stiff - I thought it was just a Croma thing. Sounds like rust on the cable or some fraying.

radlet6 may be pleased to know that Fiat built the Arian rocket in what was the old training school building in Turin and was the worlds bigest maker of artificial heart valves. I think they only made the gearbox for helicopters.

FIAT won the NATO competition in the early 50s to provide a Light Weight Strike Fighter – the FIAT G-91 Gina. It went into service with the Italian, German & Portugese Air Forces. The UK & France ignored it & went-there-own-way with the Hunter & Etendard. The US Army were interested – but I believe blocked by the USAF, who wanted exclusive rights to fixed-wing aircraft.

Is it true that the Gina had a pressurised cockpit with air-con?

It’s also argued that FIAT made the best version of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter – the F-104S. I believe they (& Alfa) also built the (GE designed) engines. (Early FIAT designed jets had UK engines – e.g. the Goblin, as in the Vampire). The F-104S was operational with the Italian Air Force for some 30+ years & retired from service in 2004.
