Engine won`t rev

Guys,

My alternator failed last week, and the car died. My local garage fitted a new alternator, but now the engine revs fine when in neutral, but as soon as it is put into drive ( its automatic) it won`t rev at all
Please help as I am losing patience with this car already.

Bob

Re: Engine won`t rev

The only thing I can think of right now is a similar episode I had in my car, which was down to the immobiliser - it doesn't kill the engine but stops it revving in gear. Does it happen all the time, has it happened all the time since the alternator was changed? Is there a warranty on the work carried out by the garage? Are there any warning lights lit up on the dashboard?

It's possible that the alternator may have 'spiked' a system or caused a fuse to blow. Once you've checked the fuses then you could try a hard reset i.e. disconnect the battery and leave it for 20 minutes or so then reconnect. Also check all electrical connections in the vicinity of the inlet manifold area as someone may have disconnected a sensor / actuator for access and not reconnected it.

If all else fails you'll have to get the car to a Fiat dealer and get it connected to Examiner.

HTH.

Re: Engine won`t rev

I have had an alternator fail. Is your battery now fully charged and in good condition?
I had to fit a new battery but have now managed to revive the old battery.

Re: Engine won`t rev

Guys,

It turned out to be the EGR valve, that had jammed shut, and would not allow the engine to rev. I had it removed and cleaned out, and all is know fine.

Re: Engine won`t rev

In my experience it's the solenoid which sticks not the valve or the fact that the valve is coaked in exhaust deposits that causes the problem. Although cleaning the valve will have a benefit it does not have to be shinny clean, just check to see that it freely opens and closes. There's a link to the Vectra Site on this forum which gives a good quide to sorting this problem without resorting to buying a new valve. The only thing I would add is where it says drill a 3mm hole, I drilled a 4mm hole and used a pin punch to tap out the solenoid inner which does the job better and without the risk of damaging the mechanism. Before tapping out the mechanism check that the manufacturer has not peened the assembly to the body by looking at the face of the body where the solenoid plunger emerges from to operate the valve, as I found on mine. If they have just drill the peening with a 2 or 2.5 mm drill using a battery drill carefully and only deep enough to remove the peened area. On mine it was peened in three positions, 2 x 120 deg, Clean the parts on a wire wheel and re-assemble with a smear of Castrol M grease and cover the drilled hole with a piece of tape cut to overlap the hole then refit the re-assembled valve to the vehicle. Due to the auckward position of the EGR Valve and the risk of dropping allen bolts or gaskets I tucked an old towel under the assembly to catch any parts dropped whilst removing or re-fitting the valve. Problem solved for a long time, if you followed the steps carefully. kadee,
