General New Croma - fuel economy

My Croma has now done 25000 miles. I was looking at eLearn today, (workshop manual on CD) and apart from the mysterious rear toe-in, which I will comment on later, I found that it is supposed to go into an economy mode, automatically. I have been keeping the instant average going, and I think I have seen economy mode once in 500 miles. I was doing about 50 in 5th on a flat road and gradually the reported mpg rose to 55. It occurs to me that this feature should be set to engage more easily. In fact it could be a cause of the poor MPG. Any dealers ever heard of this?
The alfa 2.4 engines are often reported to go better and smoother with the higher grade fuel. I have tried half a tank (to fill up) and can see no difference to the average in 60 miles. Some of the Alfa users report a sudden improvement in mpg at 15000 and 25000.

My calc makes that 41.1

Just rechecked it, using 4.546L=1 Gallon or the more common 4.55 then it still works out. With regards to 'economy mode' I'm wondering what the point would be for Fiat to set their cars up to use more fuel at other times...

My car has now done 26,000 miles with no discernible difference in economy since I got it at just under 14,000. There appears to be a 'sweet spot' in the rev range which corresponds to between 50 and 55 MPH in which it is possible to get 55-60MPG but unfortunately traffic on the roads I travel rarely permits those speeds; Artics are slower and everything else is faster.

Another cause of low MPG can be overfrequent DPF regeneration - how often does your car regenerate? Stopping and starting tends to drop the average too, probably something to do with the weight of the thing I suppose. I tried two tankfuls of the 'better' fuel once (before reading about the potential DPF issues) and found no difference in performance or refinement so didn't bother after that. Hope this helps.

Must increase font size, misread your litres, old age is the reason for getting an automatic, came with a white stick holder specially for me.

Last 370 miles has averaged 39.5mpg, including DPF regen. Now running Michelin Primacy HP tyres, so less losses, they run very cool. Still needs the "non-existant" ecu upgrade (remap) that the new model has.

Due to an unusual pattern of short journeys over christmas I have been able to calculate the fuel usage on short journeys. The first 3 miles averages 32 mpg, and after that 41 mpg, plus a 2% correction for the OBC. This is the 2.4 Auto, and gentle local driving, without getting top gear, so mostly below 60.
Definite improvement with the Michelin 17's.

As to my previous post of getting 570 miles to a tank, this of recent has plummeted. On the last 5 fill ups being using BP, but getting only 380 to 400 miles for a tank of fuel. Acceleration is poor and economy is poor. Booked mine in for all the filters to be changed and a oil change. After service will go back to Shell fuel and see what happens.

ok , first results after having EGR replaced. Full tank of fuel, 300 miles of motorway and a selection of other driving... The fuel indicator is now just off the last red bit..

Trip distance 528
Avg Consumption 41.9
Avg Speed 47
Time 11 hours 11 minutes

Filled back up with fuel this morning and managed to 56 liters in..

150 diesel Prestigio Manual 38K on the clock

Going to resurrect this thread as my fuel economy is poor even after a service and fuel filter change and diagnostic check. Car has had 4 new tyres and 4 wheel alignment check.

on a run from Nottingham to Liverpool and little town driving and return then a few more shortish runs the result is 463 miles on 55 litres (12 gallons) 38.5 MPG (computer reports 37mpg) considering i was taking easy on the speed and acceleration front, aware I might have a problem, this is not good...

how are others faring at the moment?

I thinks it me being heavy footed, had the car computer on instant fuel consumption and if I press the accelerator very lightly to accelerate I can see that I would get the claimed fuel consumption...

not much fun though..

I keep mine on trip rather than instant, every slight incline would give me kittens otherwise

Trev, you need to think of the downhill, at 99

To help understand the averages, her's a bit of simple arithmetic.

On a trip of 40 miles you do 20 miles uphill at an average of 20 mpg, and 20 miles downhill at an average of 80 mpg (fairly realistic figures), what is your overall average for the 40 miles?
Some suggestions: 24, 30, 32, 40, 45, 50, 60?
Answers please.

Unfortunately round here I seem to encounter the hills when the car is warming up, the lovely downhill bits are once warm :)

I have a daily run of 43 mile each way, and manage to squeeze just over 400 out of a tank, not bad for a petrol beastie :D :D

30 mpg for your question ?

Trev

20 miles @ 20 MPG = 1 Gallon used.
20 miles @ 80 MPG = 0.25 Gallons used.

Total distance = 40 miles.
Total fuel used = 1.25 Gallons.

40 / 1.25 = 32 MPG.

HTH.
