My Croma (year and a half old) has been in the garage for a week now. When I accelerated, the car would only move very slowly and after about 8 - 10 seconds it would hit the correct speed. To get out of my road, you go up a hill. Last week it wouldn't get up the hill! After trying a few times it eventually made it.

The Fiat garage said it was the engine control unit and ordered that part. Today, they said it's not this part and cancelled the order. It's something else and they've ordered that part now. Sorry - I can't remember what this part is.

Anyone else had this? The problem I have is that they don't know how long this part will take to arrive.

I'm not sure... whatever it was, it didn't work (part fitted today). They are now talking to Fiat to see what else they can find out. At the moment, they are at a loss.

Hi Swebb

Can you tell me did they mange to fix this problem? Mine does the same, but not as badly. I also have the problem where every so often I get a message on start up saying that the ESP is unavailable with a yellow triangle warning light. Everything goes back to normal after a few hundred yards, except the reluctance to pull away. I notice that you are also concerned about the fuel consumption on your car, as am I on mine.

They have replaced the control unit on mine laready, to no avail.

Hi Guys

MY JTD 130 wouldn't do over 60 and couldn't even overtake trucks on a motorway hill!!!

What kind of milages have your cars done and what type of driving do they do ie motorway, oap etc

In my experience the causes of no power in JTD engines are as followed
1.MAF (air flow) sensor faulty - to test disconnect the plug to sensor, this puts ECU into default mode and you should see an improvement.
2.EGR valve blocked/Jammed - No power low down - Easy 5 minute job to remove and clean in some carb cleaner. Also check EGR/Inlet vent pipe for carbon build up.
3.Fly by wire throttle has a bad connection on the multiplug - the plug is on top of the throttle.
4.Fuel filter/Air filter badly blocked
5.Turbo/Intercooler hoses split (usually underneath)
6.ECU failure.........very very very rare. Caused by EGR being faulty for long period of time that messes up the MAS sensor then the ECU.

A week into ownership and my car is exhibiting this feature quit scary, when you press the accelerator the car just moves very slowly revs increase very slowly no warning lights on the dash, then suddenly the car works normally.

first did it yesterday from a roundabout, then again on the way home from work just pulling out of the car park, seems to be when the car is cold..

ever get a fix for this?

nice to know its happening elsewhere (not), looks as if it could be a common fault, mines only done 34k and is just three years old..
will try these from above:

2.EGR valve blocked/Jammed - No power low down - Easy 5 minute job to remove and clean in some carb cleaner. Also check EGR/Inlet vent pipe for carbon build up.
3.Fly by wire throttle has a bad connection on the multiplug - the plug is on top of the throttle.

Mine is now sorted (see post of 17.06.08 above) - but was related to a host of other problems (ESP warning light, engine management light, air bag light, auto transmission light - complete malfunction of all systems stranding my partner)

I may arrange for mine to go into a dealership\specialist to have the computer codes read.. see what comes out they may even know about the issue.

Also the Humming sound, that I think is a feature seems to be getting worse, or I am becoming more aware of it. may get that checked as well.

been doing a bit research on here and other www places looks as if the EGR valve maybe the cause as it can stick marginally open, FIAT have now redesigned the EGR valve to prevent this happening. Although it is not subject to a recall..

anyone else come across this...

Mine does it about once a week or so. I thought it would happen everyday, but no, just when i think the problem has corrected itself, it happens again :(

Great.

Now my Bravo is in on the act! Exactly as described here, and the Mrs thinks it did it before when she was driving it. As it's under warranty perhaps a trip to the dealer could shed some light on the issue for you Croma folk without the luxury of Fiat picking up the bill after?

I have done a bit of reading on the alfa forum, and it looks as if the EGR valve could be the cause, as it has a tendency to stick open by a couple of mm, basically it needs replacing. Although a few have cleaned it but it soon comes back. Mine is booked in for week on Wednesday at fiat dealer.

May i ask how much this EGR valve is costing you to be replaced, as mine Croma has the same problem?

wont know until it goes into the dealership, but I have read that others have been charged between £90 and £110 if that is what the problem is. I had a similar problem on previous car Renault Laguna II once is was all cleaned up it was fine as long as I did not use supermarket diesel...
